EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- An act of kindness on the job went a long way for an El Cajon family. On Christmas eve, two El Cajon police officers didn’t hesitate to buy dinner for a family living in their car. While always ready to respond to calls, officers never know exactly what they'll find. On this Christmas Eve call, they found a woman named Juanita and her two children, living in their car. Detective Travis Howard is President of the El Cajon Police Officers Association. He says the officers bought the family dinner at Jack in the Box and then closed the call. But after their shift, they wanted to do more, dipping in their own pockets to get the family a hotel room for two nights so they wouldn't be homeless on Christmas. The two police officers who first helped the family didn’t do it for the praise and asked to remain anonymous. 859

During his visit to San Diego, President Trump took a few moments to heap praise on San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer over his approach to homelessness."In the case of San Diego the mayor's doing the right thing, he's doing a good job," Trump said.The president went on to take aim at Los Angeles and San Francisco."It's a total disaster, they're going to ruin those cities," Trump said. Those comparisons, then echoed Thursday by Housing Secretary Ben Carson in an unpublicized visit to a temporary bridge shelter in San Diego."Night and day, difference," Carson said. "I don't want to, you know, have everybody come to San Diego becuase you're doing such a good job, but that's the danger."Platitudes aside, the city of San Diego still has a population of about five thousand homeless people - around half sleeping on the streets. A spokeswoman for the mayor said Faulconer has taken a broad approach through temporary bridge shelters, safe parking lots, storage and outreach, with a goal of permanent supportive housing. But homeless advocate Michael McConnell dismissed Trump's statement as partisan politics. Faulconer and Trump are both Republicans, while leadership in Los Angeles and San Francisco is largely democratic. "This is all political," McConnell said, adding the city should focus more on permanent solutions. "There's nothing wrong with giving people access to a shelter, but once they're in that shelter that can't be their home. We have to invest in getting them out of the shelter."But Bob McElroy, who heads Alpha Project and its temporary bridge shelter, said Faulconer deserves praise above other politicians."He's doing better than anybody I know," McElroy said.In a statement, Faulconer said homelessness should not become political."We have an action-oriented approach on homelessness in San Diego, and over 40 agencies and cities led by both Republicans and Democrats have come to see our new programs in action," the mayor said. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Sunday after an El Cajon officer was seriously injured after being dragged by a vehicle earlier in December.According to police, Keani Flores, 28, was a passenger in the vehicle involved in the assault on the officer, Nick Cirello.The driver of the vehicle, David Pangilinan was seen in the Oakhurst area by officers,When police tried to conduct a traffic stop, Pangilinan fled the scene and “evaded apprehension,” police said. Flores was reportedly located at a motel nearby. Authorities are still searching for Pangilinan.Officer Cirello was hit by the vehicle on December 14 on the 100 block of West Washington Street after officers responded to a call regarding a vehicle blocking the roadway with the driver and passenger asleep inside the vehicle.When officers tried to wake the pair up, the driver provided identification for someone else before starting the vehicle.When Cirello tried to stop him, he was dragged before being struck by another vehicle traveling past the scene.Cirello was taken to the hospital before being released on December 18.
