DENVER – No, that's not snow in the image you see above. As much as four inches of hail was reported along Interstate 70 in the Floyd Hill area west of Denver on Friday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The storms were moving into the metro area and were expected to bring rain, more hail, lightning and strong winds through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. The strongest portion of the storm appeared to be heading east through the southern side of the metro, toward Ken Caryl, Littleton and Centennial. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for that area, including Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree until 4 p.m. The hail had stopped falling in the Floyd Hill area by 3 p.m., according to CSP, and Colorado Department of Transportation crews were clearing the area with plows. CHICAGO — From May to October, a team of people is working every day, even weekends, to look for dead birds on the ground in downtown Chicago.Annually, about 5,000 birds that are not native to the region are injured or killed after colliding into Chicago’s glassy reflective skyscrapers. The team looking for the birds is documenting what kind are coming though the city. The birds live in rain forests and wild areas and are not experienced with tall buildings, group members say. It’s a foreign environment for them, so they are easily hurt, says group member Annette Prince. The group aims to decrease the number of birds killed in the city and is pushing for more bird-friendly building designs throughout the nation. One suggestion the team has is to turn lights out at night.“We are No. 1 in the urban lighting we put out,” Prince said. Less glass helps with the problem, too.“It’s estimated that there are a billion birds a year killed in windows, with a huge concentrations in cities like Chicago,” she said. This is something the U.S. can fix, Prince said.“There are things you can do to make buildings safe, and to protect these birds that are so valuable to us,” she said. 1192

EL PASO, Texas — There's a work of art going up on a wall in El Paso, Texas. The man behind it is Manuel Oliver. He lost his son, Joaquin, in the Parkland school shooting.Sunday would've been Joaquin's 19th birthday.Oliver was already scheduled to be in El Paso, Texas, this weekend, putting a mural up at an immigrant advocacy center, when the mass shooting happened Saturday."Because it is his birthday, we always try to put together things that Joaquin would do," Oliver said. "And this is something that Joaquin will be very happy to do. Scream out his support for the immigrants."He is continuing with the mural, but hasn't said what it will be yet, only saying it will show support for the city of El Paso. People will have to just wait until it is revealed."This is the reason why we are here," the artist said. "Now, yesterday, 29 people were shot down, just like Joaquin.“It's very painful. And, um, I think ... somebody needs to do the dirty job."Murals like the one he is painting in El Paso have been Oliver's post-Parkland calling.“I'm not taking this as a new norm, " Oliver said. "I won't. I'm not accepting that my son was shot down and I should do nothing. I won’t have that as an option. Actually I’m gonna quote my beautiful son Joaquin now. F*** that."The artist also has a message for El Paso and the rest of the country."You have to stay strong. This shouldn't be a surprise for this nation, unless we do something, unless we are louder with our message, things will stay the same," Oliver said. "Let's not take this as a tradition and let's fight for our loved ones that cannot use their own voices to let politicians here them. Be strong, and we're with you." 1695
