LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — La Mesa's police chief said the incident where a woman was shot in the head with a bean bag round during last weekend's protest is under investigation.LMPD Chief Walt Vasquez said during a press conference that the officer involved has been identified and that the incident was being investigated.Mayor Mark Arapostathis said another press conference would be held to follow up on the investigation. "The incident is under review and will be addressed at a future press conference. She and hundreds of other people were protesting police violence and the death of George Floyd.Furcron's son, Ahmed, said after the press conference that the department's response was not enough. "We want to know what's going on. My mom is 59-years-old. She didn't break any laws. She wasn't being violent or nothing. We want answers. She was shot between the eyes. (CNS) - Helicopters made water-dropping sorties Thursday morning on fast-moving, out-of-control wildfire, which was 0% contained after scorching 10,500 acres in the Lake Hughes area, prompting the mandatory evacuation of at least 100 structures.The Lake Fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to Marvin Lim of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which was battling the blaze along with Angeles National Forest crews, as well as assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterery Park and Santa Monica fire departments.ABC 10News learned teams from Rancho Santa Fe, Vista Fire, San Miguel Fire, Lakeside Fire, Oceanside Fire, Camp Pendleton, Pala Reservation, San Pasqual, and likely San Diego Fire-Rescue were dispatched to assist in the firefighting effort.Three San Diego County strike teams will also respond, with each team bringing five trucks.As of 7 a.m. Thursday, the fire's size was listed as 10,500 acres, with three structures destroyed and 5,420 threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. LAKE WALES, Florida — A 38-year-old man was arrested after being accused of shooting and killing another man on Thanksgiving Day in Polk County.Steven Nicholas Hunt, 38 of Winter Haven, is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after fatally shooting Stephen Edward Roberts, 45 of Lake Wales, in his home, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.Deputies said they responded to Roberts' home on Lake Buffum Road in Lake Wales and found him with a gunshot wound to his head after receiving a call, at approximately 2:30 p.m., from a woman who said she had dropped off Hunt at the Circle K gas station located at 7695 Highway 60 East in Bartow after the incident.According to an arrest affidavit, the woman told deputies she and Roberts initially drove to Hunt's house to take him to Walmart and then went to Roberts' home in Lake Wales afterward. While at Roberts' home, she said she showered, went into another bedroom after seeing the two talking in the master bedroom and then heard what sounded like a gunshot.Hunt initially told deputies he went to the Circle K with the witness but did not know of what happened at Roberts' home. He then said he 'suddenly remembered' he was with Roberts in his home when he was shot. In the arrest affidavit, Hunt goes on to say that he was talking with Roberts in his bedroom when tried to hand him a handgun and asked him to 'put him out of his misery.' Hunt said eventually Roberts told him to leave and close the door and as he was walking away he heard a gunshot.Later, during a clarifying interview, Hunt gave another description of the shooting to deputies. He said Roberts' ask him to shoot him and then showed him how to use the handgun. Hunt told deputies he took the handgun from Roberts, as Roberts laid down and put a pillow over his head, and shot him in the head before putting the handgun next to him on the bed.Deputies said Hunt told them "he believed he fired another shot at Roberts," after the witness told him he was still breathing and asked him to help him."While most people in the county were enjoying a holiday meal with their families and loved ones on Thanksgiving day, a senseless murder was taking place in Lake Wales. Our deputies, detectives, and crime scene investigators worked throughout the day and well into the night on this case. We are grateful that this violent convicted felon was taken into custody swiftly and without further injury to anyone else. Our condolences go out to the victim and his loved ones," said Sheriff Grady Judd.Hunt's criminal history includes 16 previous felony and 10 misdemeanor charges; 7 felony and 6 misdemeanor convictions; and numerous previous arrests for battery domestic violence, resisting arrest, burglary, larceny, grand theft of a firearm, dealing in stolen property, possession of meth, possession of marijuana. His most recent arrest was November 7, 2018, for battery domestic violence. LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Thousands of MGM Resorts employees will lose their jobs effective Aug. 31, according to a letter sent this morning by CEO Bill Hornbuckle.Approximately 18,000 are being laid off. It is unclear how many Las Vegas employees will be affected. Most but not all of the MGM Resorts properties have reopened in Las Vegas.The hotel-casinos were forced to close because of the coronavirus pandemic. They were allowed to reopen June 4 but business has not been the same.MGM Resorts also operates casinos in Mississippi, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York and overseas in Macao. It is not clear how many employees at each locations are impacted by the lay offs. LANCASTER, Calif. – A man has been arrested for the murders of his 12-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter in Lancaster, California, which is north of Los Angeles.The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that fire personnel located the victims when they were called to the family's home to investigate a possible gas leak Friday morning.Detectives say the children both appeared to have suffered from lacerations and stab wounds.The mayor of Lancaster, Rex Parris, confirmed to KABC and the L.A. Times that the children were both found decapitated. He told the newspaper that “it was pretty brutal.”Officials tell the L.A. Times that the victims were found in separate bedrooms in the home and it’s unclear how long they had been dead.At the home, the sheriff’s department says there were also two adults and two other children who were questioned by homicide investigators. The L.A. Times identified the two adults as the victims’ parents.The children's father, Maurice Taylor Sr., was later arrested on murder charges and booked into jail, where he’s being held with a million bail.The L.A. Times reports the suspect is a personal trainer who acquaintances described as being “mellow” and “reliable.”Detectives say they’re continuing to investigate the murders.
