With Halloween coming up, there’s candy everywhere. It can be easy to go overboard on the sweets, but nutritionists say there are ways to indulge and keep your health in check. With around 600 million pounds of Halloween candy bought each year, registered dietitian Sara Scheler says some treats are more nutritious than others. Scheler says she recommends Reese’s over Snickers. “I prefer them because they have simple ingredients,” said Scheler. “There’s really just sugar, a little bit of fat, chocolate and peanuts, where Snickers has a much longer label and corn syrup as well.”What about M&Ms vs. KitKats? “I would pick KitKats over M&Ms. I don’t like M&Ms because they have all that artificial color along with them and they do have a lot more concentrated sugar.”SweetTarts or Nerds?“So SweetTarts are my pick over Nerds because Nerds have a slightly larger serving size even though that box is really tiny, it still has more candy in it.”Twix or Milk Way?“Between Twix and Milk Way, I would actually say that’s a tie. They have similar amount of calories, similar amounts of added sugar.”If you plan on indulging in a few pieces of candy over the next few weeks, Scheler also suggests eating them at a certain time.“It’s best to eat sugar, especially processed sugar, with a meal, so that our blood glucose level doesn’t spike as high. (AP) — Scamp the Tramp will never win a beauty contest. But he's won an ugly one.The bug-eyed, dreadlocked pooch took top honors Friday night at the 31st annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest.Owner Yvonne Morones of Santa Rosa, California, won an appearance with Scamp on the "Today" show, ,500 in cash, another ,500 to donate to an animal shelter — and a trophy the size of a Rottweiler."He's Scamp the Champ, no longer Scamp the Tramp," Morones told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat after the victory. Tostito, owned by Molly Horgan of Falmouth, Maine, also won the Spirit Award.This year's People's Choice Award went to Meatloaf, a bulldog mix with protruding teeth owned by Denae Pruner of Sacramento, California.Everyone knows ugliness is in the eye of the beholder and, to a dog lover, there is no such thing as an uncomely canine. Weird-looking, maybe. Appearance-challenged, perhaps. Or, as owners of ugly dogs like to say, "unique."Like Willie Wonka, a sweet-natured pit bull abandoned after he was discovered to have a genetic malady that left his legs so bowed he could barely walk.With a chuckle, publicist Christy Gentry said the competition wasn't just about being ugly."Judges are looking for special attributes like hanging tongues, slobber, drool (the more the better). Maybe unusual patches of skin or hair," she explained.Last year's champion, an English bulldog named Zsa Zsa, with a tongue that hung nearly to the ground, endeared herself to the judges when she sneezed and drooled all over them.Soon she was headed to New York for national TV appearances. With the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yet to develop a regulatory framework for CBD-infused products, states are stepping in. This week, Illinois introduced new legislation that could require the testing of CBD products sold in its state. The hemp-derived cannabidiol, or CBD, is sold as a supplement, promising to manage everything from anxiety and insomnia to chronic pain.Rahul Easwar, co-founder of Chicago-based CBD-retailer LeafyQuick, says the product is everywhere.“Gummies, edibles, we’ve got bath bombs, salts, topical lotions," Easwar says. "You name it, there’s CBD in it.”But while some CBD shops like LeafyQuick only sell products that have been tested, there are no laws requiring that. “We don’t obviously accept every brand that knocks on our door, and we go through a very stringent due-diligence process,” says Easwar.And because CBD products are considered supplements rather than drugs, they remain largely unregulated. Since 2015 the Food and Drug Administration has issued more than four dozen warning letters to firms marketing unapproved drugs allegedly containing CBD. Many did not contain the levels of the cannabis derivative they claimed to.It’s that uncertainty about what’s in the products that prompted Illinois state representative Bob Morgan to act. “These are products coming in from other states more often than not are not being tested,” says Morgan. “We don't know if they have heavy metals pesticides contaminants synthetic THC or something way worse.”Morgan is pushing a bill that would require all CBD products sold in the state to pass minimum testing standards. “We should have these high expectations, especially since people were consuming this product,” says Morgan. “These are things people are ingesting and we have to make sure they’re safe.”If they’re not safe, the proposed law would require untested products to be pulled from shelves and online. Sellers violating the law could face stiff fines.It’s something retailers like Rahul Easwar say is essential to the CBD business' long-term success.“Especially retailers, more so the consumers need to demand such regulations and more stringent regulations in my opinion.”For now, there are still no national standards for CBD testing. Morgan says until federal regulators catch it’s up to the states to take the lead. 2334
