PHOENIX — Besides being our best friends, there are plenty of important jobs our dogs can be good at, like assisting people with disabilities, arson investigations and police work.  But is there a way to find out what is on a dog's resume before they go through all of that expensive training?  Researchers at the University of Arizona believe they may have found a solution. It is called the Canine Aptitude Test and it is in the early stages of development. The test is for adult dogs and looks to see if a dog's cognitive behavior will dictate where they would have more success as a working dog. "With assistance dogs that help people with disabilities, only about 50 percent of the dogs who begin training ultimately make it through," said Arizona Canine Cognition Center Director Evan MacLean. That means that major amounts of money are going to the dogs with no return on investment.For those who rely on these pets to live their lives, they are forced to wait sometimes up to two years or more."If that were any other kind of medical procedure it would be, we would think about this as a horrible thing," MacLean explained. "I need this operation and there's a two-year waiting list to get it. So, we would do something about that. So we want to do something about that with the dogs, too." Shelby Smith spoke to the University of Arizona on the impact an assistance dog has had on her life with a disability."Picasso to me is more than independence ... he's my best friend," Smith said. Parents worried about a lack of social-emotional growth in their young children during social distancing and child care closures, consider playing with the family dog or taking the whole family on the dog's walk.A study published this week in Pediatric Research points to improvements in toddlers’ behavior interacting with others when they have some amount of time spent with the family dog.Information from more than 1,600 parents were included in the study, which asked how old their children were, if they had a dog, how often the child went on the family dog walks or actively played with the dog, as well as other questions. In addition, parents filled out a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire about their child’s development and behavior.Overall, researchers found that preschool aged children from dog-owning homes had reduced likelihood of conduct problems and increased likelihood of prosocial behavior compared to children without a dog. Positive results were seen with family dog walking at least once a week and active play between the family and dog at least three times or more a week.The study’s authors report part of their motivation for the study was the decreasing physical activity levels of young children. They reference studies on increased activity among adult dog owners, and wanted to look at whether there were increased levels in children with dogs in the home.Participants live in Australia, and gave their survey results between 2015 to 2018 as part of a larger early childhood education and care research project.The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire is a commonly used, 25-item document that measures the social and emotional well-being of children.If a family dog is not possible at this time, maybe consider offering to walk a neighbor’s pet; physical activity, interacting with an animal and the benefit of doing something nice for a neighbor. 1900

PARKLAND, Florida — As students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School return from spring break, they will face several new security changes at the school.On Monday, students will receive clear backpacks for free, and the superintendent says those will be the only backpacks allowed on campus.The thousands of students at the school will also now wear a school identification badge everywhere on campus.This comes after the deadly school shooting in February that killed 17 people, but also after a series of incidents the week leading up to spring break.Two students were charged with bringing weapons on campus, and a third made a threat on social media.Deputies also arrested the confessed shooter’s brother for trespassing on the school property. Zachary Cruz pleaded no contest Thursday and sentenced to time served and six months of probation.A Broward County sheriff’s deputy was also suspended for allegedly sleeping in his patrol car while on duty at the school.Florida Highway Patrol will also have eight troopers stationed at the school entrances. The Broward County School district is providing additional security as well.This district will also consider metal detectors, metal detector wands, and trying to consolidate the point of entry for students and staff.The memorial that honored their classmates for the past six weeks is no longer there.
