"So, we need to offer them somewhere where they can come in, and get their work done, get help, but have a safe place where they can do that.”The nationwide pandemic pod popularity really took off after the creation of a Pandemic Pod Facebook group in San Francisco founded by Lian Chikako Chang.“We do think that what’s happening now is not the best solution," Chang said. "We think it is in many ways a worst-case scenario. It’s private, ad-hoc solutions that are not frankly equitable, but they do have the capacity to help children of all income levels.”Different communities have different needs, and that’s why Nikolai Pizarro de Jesus created the BIPOC-led Pandemic Pods Facebook group. BIPOC stands for Black-Indigenous People of Color.She says the main pandemic pod group wasn’t fitting the needs of the Black and brown demographic.“I saw that the demographic was different; the narrative was a little bit different from my market, the price point of the teachers was different from my market,” Pizarro de Jesus said.According to Pizarro de Jesus, the flexibility of work and ability to pay for care contribute to the challenges faced by Black and brown parents right now. However, she says the racial equity divide isn’t an issue of pandemic pods.“The truth is that the existing educational system prior to the pandemic was already not working for Black and brown children.”Pizarro de Jesus says all working parents are trying to come up with solutions to support their kids, and those solutions may vary between communities. For McBride’s community, that means using volunteers, retired teachers and community members as caregivers.“Our learning pod will be free. That will be no cost to the community. And we have some excellent teachers that are involved with students in these schools already who have committed to saying ‘we will do this, and we will be there to help these students,’” McBride said.McBride says he believes learning pods are a way to give Black and brown students an opportunity to succeed. As someone who trains parents how to go from public school to homeschooling, Pizarro de Jesus says she’s already seen the positive impact learning pods can have on its students.“I will say that a lot of children inside of pods and homeschooling coops end up thriving because they’re getting one-on-one care because they’re not being measured with the same metrics, because they’re not being graded, not being subjected to standardized testing because they’re not walking through school metal detectors every day,” Pizarro de Jesus said.And when it comes to education in general, McBride says investing in marginalized communities will make it more equitable for all. He says he believes this disruption in our schooling routine is a chance to make a change.“It’s a simple thing. I can’t rely on the flowers to get there before Christmas,” said Christensen.Christensen makes hand-painted aluminum wreaths and wall art shaped like flowers. In January, this artist from Wixom opened her “Bendable Blooms” shop on the website ‘Etsy.’ But the wreaths she mailed to customers on Nov. 29 got stuck “in transit” at the USPS Detroit Network Distribution Center (NDC) in Allen Park.“My Etsy shoppers are starting to contact me, wanting either their money back or wanting to know where these are at,” said Christensen.Christensen was forced to choose between losing about 0 by refunding customers, or getting bad reviews which can have a long-term impact on her business. Combs says some of that restructuring means employees based in metro Detroit now report to managers out of state.“They should have started hiring these seasonal people much earlier than they did, I would say back in May, June or July-- getting prepared to bring those new people on. The tractor-trailer guys that I represent would have needed to have more trailers, even if they needed to be purchased or rented. So you can have a place to have this mail staged to be able to move smoothly from point A to point B,” Combs told 7 Investigator Heather Catallo. “I don’t think that happened. And there needed to be some thought process on how the mail flow was going to operate inside the building so that the safety of the employees was addressed and you didn’t have so much mail that there was not even walking room in some of these plants.”Combs says letters are also piled up at the USPS facility on W. Fort Street in Detroit. He says he and other union leaders reached out to management last May to prepare for the holiday “peak” as postal workers call it. Combs said their requests fell on deaf ears.“Postal employees are so diligent in what they do and feel like they need to do a great job all the time, as they do. I’m getting calls from my members and employees saying this is a problem, we need to be better. And again, they’re doing such a great job with trying to get this mail delivered. But it’s the people who are appointed over them that are not doing a great job in making sure that’s happening,” said Combs.Combs says letters are also piled up at the USPS facility on West Fort Street in Detroit.USPS spokeswoman Elizabeth Najduch sent us a statement about the delays in Allen Park:“The 640,000 employees of the U.S Postal Service across the nation are proud to provide an essential service to our customers during the pandemic and to meet unprecedented challenges of this extraordinary year.The Detroit NDC has faced challenges recently due to COVID-19 at the same time mail volumes have dramatically increased. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - San Diego’s North County Transit District detailed Friday the structural reinforcements made to the Del Mar bluffs following a “washout on the tracks.” Two areas were washed out on the bluffs south of Seagrove Park following the Thanksgiving storm, the NCTD reported. Jacobs Engineering and Leighton Consulting reviewed the cause of the track washouts. A preliminary report found the following contributing factors: Excessive stormwater run-on from the City of Del Mar’s residential streets and adjacent properties. Existing drainage facilities (earthen swale drainage ditches) to include culvert clean outs, stormwater overflow not channeled correctly built up and overflowed the main track just south of 13th Street causing erosion on the west side of the Cast-In-Drilled-Hole (CIDH) piles. Debris was observed on the ends of the ties and evidence of the drainage overflowing the track adjacent to the CIDH piles. Drainage channels were completely silted in at this location as well. Excessive silt was a result of overwhelmed inlets from heavy rain and excessive City of Del Mar run-on stormwater that mobilized right-of-way sediment and sediment migrated further, blocking inlets and filling in earthen trackside ditches. RELATED: Del Mar cliff crumbles near train tracks following heavy rainsAt the southernmost point of erosion, two one-inch thick steel plates measuring eight by ten feet and concrete slurry were used as a temporary fix, the NCTD said. The northern washout location will require engineers to analyze it, according to the NCTD. The repairs will be made no later than Jan. 11-12, a date previously scheduled to complete other rail work. Until the repairs are finished, the NCTD said it will have an inspector stationed at the bluffs around the clock to ensure safety for passengers and train crews. RELATED: Del Mar bluffs near train tracks under 24/7 surveillance“This event highlights the fragile nature and lack of resiliency of the Del Mar Bluffs. It is critical that we advance projects to stabilize the Bluffs for the next 20 to 30 years so that the region can determine and implement a permanent solution. Over the last few years, we have all seen the impacts of sea level rise and we should expect that we will continue to see more weather-related events like this most recent rainstorm moving forward,” said NCTD Executive Director Matthew Tucker. Tucker and San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Executive Director Hasan Ikhrata issued a joint memorandum supporting projects to secure the bluffs. DEL MAR (CNS) - Two horses had to be taken by van from the track at Del Mar Racetrack Friday but both are expected to recover.The 5-year-old mare Magnolia's Hope was vanned off after being eased in the stretch of the fourth race, a 6 1/2-furlong claiming race on the dirt track for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have never won two races."Though it is never good to be given a van ride, this does not appear to be a case of a life-threatening injury," Mac McBride, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's director of media, told City News Service. "We should know more about her condition tomorrow."Magnolia's Hope was fourth at the start of the race, took the lead a quarter-mile into the race and dropped to fourth in the field of seven through a half-mile.Magnolia's Hope has one victory in nine career starts, along with two second-place finishes and one third-place finish. She has earned ,260 in her career.The 4-year-old filly Velvet Queen also was vanned off after finishing third in the eighth race, a mile race on the dirt track for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have never won ,000 once other than maiden. Velvet Queen injured a tendon, which McBride described as "not a major injury, one that equine (and human) athletes suffer in competition.""She'll need some time off to recover, but should be fine," McBride said.Velvet Queen has three victories, four second-place finishes and three third-place finishes in 16 career starts.
