SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A 76-year-old woman who died on May 24 is the first local fatality of e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday.Three vaping-associated lung injuries in young adults were confirmed in recent weeks and are the first reports of the lung illness in San Diego County since 2019.All the newly reported local cases tested negative for the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, and all reported recently vaping products containing THC.The California Department of Public Health recently recognized new reports of confirmed lung-injury cases in persons vaping THC-containing products in April, after no cases had been reported since February.Since July 2019, a total of 52 EVALI cases have been reported in San Diego County residents. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 19-year-old accused in the fatal beating of a 56- year-old man near a pedestrian bridge behind Petco Park was ordered Friday to stand trial on a murder charge, though a torture count was dismissed by a judge.Dominick Wells is accused in the Nov. 18, 2018, beating of Edward Starland, who was left comatose following the attack allegedly perpetrated by Wells and four juveniles. The juveniles -- two girls and two boys -- face unspecified charges in an ongoing juvenile court case.Witnesses said Starland had been fighting with a group of young people the afternoon of Nov. 18 before he was thrown down and beaten. SAN DIEGO (AP) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Tuesday began testing the use of body cameras by its employees at nine locations, potentially leading to a broad rollout by the nation's largest law enforcement agency that would make it the first federal agency to use the devices on a large scale.Customs and Border Protection previously concluded in 2015 after a yearlong study that body cameras were not yet suitable for widespread use due to cost, technological challenges and the need for labor union approval. However, it said the cameras had potential in limited circumstances.The agency's review also found that cameras used in field tests did not function well in the rugged, remote conditions in which many Border Patrol agents work."Some fared better than others," said Austin Skero, director of the agency's law enforcement safety and compliance directorate.Customs and Border Protection officials said technology has evolved since the 2015 test, and the cameras used in the current field tests will build on lessons learned in the previous test. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Mira Mesa dentist who bilked insurance companies out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by submitting claims for procedures she never performed, including hundreds of supposed root canals, has been sentenced to six years in state prison, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced today.April Rose Ambrosio, 59, pleaded guilty to three counts of insurance fraud earlier this year for fraudulently billing insurance companies for 6,700, for which she received more than 0,000 from 10 insurance companies, according to prosecutors.The DA's Office said Ambrosio falsely claimed she performed 800 root canals on 100 patients, despite not having specialized training as an endodontist to perform such procedures.Ambrosio was sentenced earlier this month, and in addition to a six- year prison term, was ordered to pay 5,633 in restitution. Her license to practice dentistry was also suspended last year, a few months after she was charged.Prosecutors say the fraud occurred between 2014 and 2018. During that time, Ambrosio billed for work she said occurred on days her office was closed and billed for more than 100 root canals during a three- month period, all of which were supposedly performed for a family of four, according to the DA's Office.
