More veterans are getting hired but many are still likely to be underemployed, according to new data from LinkedIn. An underemployed worker is defined as someone whose skill set is not being used at their job. Experts say what often happens is veterans will start receiving letters or emails saying a job has been filled. So veterans will likely turn to other positions where they can get hired but may not use their skills. “We believe that employers have kind of unintentionally created programs that have really created the path of least resistance for the veteran community, so it’s pipelined them into particular industries or certain roles, which has sort of limited the aperture of what's available and what's possible,” says Sara Roberts, the head of military and veteran programs at LinkedIn. Experts at LinkedIn say it's important for veterans to research the industry when they begin to look at civilian jobs to understand the type of jobs that are out there. And to network, especially with other veteran groups. “What veterans can do is be thoughtful and intentional about diversifying their network with industry leaders, as they plan for what's next, and the different types of opportunities that they're excited about, especially as they make their transition,” Robert says. New NYPD training videos released Wednesday clearly show officers what they can and cannot do when taking a suspect into custody,But sometimes that training does not translate in real life. There's already there’s a law on the books banning officers from putting people in chokeholds, but the city council wants to take things a step further, banning officers from applying pressure or restricting a suspect's diaphragm.“It’s tough right now to be a police officer," said NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. "You have to worry that if a suspect shot at you and you put a knee on his back, that now you become the criminal.”Monahan said these new rules have his officers fighting crime with their hands tied behind their backs.Those in favor say that officers are merely being given a script telling them how to behave in a critical incident. However, there are still those that argue that the city council does not have expertise in police tactics.Even so, the NYPD argues every encounter is different and a blanket law is not the answer. This will be done through forensic analysis of the remains, and by comparing them with funeral home and death certificate records. Archaeologists conducted extensive test excavations and concluded with no evidence of human remains.However, the search could continue beyond Oaklawn Cemetery. Researchers said several areas are still candidates for possible mass grave sites related to the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. CHICAGO, Ill. – Scientists have identified nearly 70 drugs that could be effective in treating the coronavirus. But already, some drugs are being improperly prescribed or hoarded even before they can be adequately investigated and tested. For some who rely on the life-saving drugs for other ailments, shortages are already being felt. Across the country, some people with chronic illnesses are finding their much-needed medications are on backorder. One drug in short supply is Plaquenil, generically known as hydroxychloroquine sulfate. It’s used to treat malaria and chronic rheumatic diseases. “It prevents them from having severe pain, from their symptoms getting worse, from forming modules. This is a daily medication that these people absolutely need,” said Erin Fox, who’s with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Fox, who maintains a list of nationwide drug shortages, says four of the eight producers of hydroxychloroquine are running out. “We’ve definitely seen a rapid increase in demand for this product,” she said. “I think it’s a frustrating problem and I think it’s really scary for those patients that rely on this medication day in and day out.” While hydroxychloroquine is not FDA-approved as an off-label treatment option for novel coronavirus, it has already been touted by the president as a potential game-changer. “Millions of units are ordered, and we’re going to see what happens,” said President Donald Trump. “We’re going to be talking to the governors about it, and the FDA is working on it right now.” Last week, a French study of just 20 people reported 70% of coronavirus patients treated with Plaquenil after six days tested negative for the virus, compared to 12.5% of the control group. Hospitals across the country are stockpiling it as a precaution. The state of New York has already acquired 70,000 doses as part of its own drug trials this week. But with no large-scale clinical data available, public health officials warn it’s too early to know whether the drug is effective against coronavirus.
