SORRENTO VALLEY (KGTV): An 11-year old volunteer is proving that age doesn't matter when it comes to helping the hungry.Aiden Gruby has been volunteering at Feeding San Diego since he was six. His parents brought him as part of a family activity. He was hooked immediately."I think it’s really great. I love that feeling of helping people," he says.He loved it so much that his family started coming every week. When Aiden turned 10, Feeding San Diego asked him to become a team leader.Typically, the organization waits until people are 13 before they can take a leadership role.As a leader, Aiden helps with orientation and rules. He also directs volunteers as they sort food."I’m just so proud of him wanting to give back to our community," says mom Janessa Gruby. "There are kids who would rather spend their weekend playing sports, or playing video games, and he has asked us to come every weekend."Aiden says his favorite part of the job is "reclamation," which is the process of checking all incoming food for package integrity, expiration date and then sorting it by category.He has no plans to slow down any time soon."I think it’s really good to help people in need of food," he says. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School six years ago, the way law enforcement and citizens handle these events has changed.The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has partnered with a program known as ALERRT, which stands for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.The program was created in order to help standardize the response to active shooters and streamline their response in a crisis. "It was important to make sure everybody received the same training, knowing that if that response occurs, it's going to be a multi-agency response,” said Nathaniel McQueen, with Delaware State Police, in an interview with CNN.But all of this occurs once police get to the scene.What about before?"On an average of three minutes, those cops are gonna show up and they are going to take that shooter's attention from you towards them,” says Gordon B. Johnson, FBI special agent in charge at the Baltimore field office.The other major shift in response is putting the training in the hands of those who could be actually be there."Those three minutes belong to you, they do not belong to the shooter, for an average of three minutes it's up to you to survive," Johnson says.That means teaching teachers and civilians when to run and when running may not be an option.The FBI reports 30 active shooter events in 2017, setting a record.It's why training like this continues today.All of it centering from the horrific day on December 14, 2012 when 20 children and six adults were killed in Newtown. 1523
Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is calling the House back into session this week to vote on a bill prohibiting the U.S. Postal Service from implementing any changes to operations or level of service. The action comes amid growing concerns that the Trump White House is trying to undermine the agency during the coronavirus pandemic while states expand mail-in voting options. A senior Democratic aide tells The Associated Press that House Democrats are likely to discuss the schedule on a conference call on Monday and are expected to be in session next Saturday.Pelosi sent a letter to Democratic members, stating that changes to the post office would "threaten to deny the ability of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the upcoming elections in a timely fashion. These delays also threaten the health and economic security of the American people by delaying delivery of life-saving medicines and payments. In 2019, 1.2 billion prescriptions were delivered through the Postal Services, including almost 100 percent from the VA to veterans." Any changes would need the approval of the Senate and president. Seven members of President Trump’s Cabinet told Scripps News they do not fly on private jets paid for by taxpayers.Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price drew attention for taking five private jet flights on official business last week instead of flying commercially. His staff said using a private plane allowed him to maximize his time on the ground managing hurricane preparation and recovery efforts.“Commercial travel is not always feasible,” Price spokeswoman Charmaine Yoest said.We asked other members of the president’s Cabinet if they travel for official business on private jets, instead of taking a commercial flight or government plane. The responses show a different approach to private jet use, varying by agency.Cabinet secretaries who have not flown taxpayer-funded private jets include HUD Secretary Ben Carson, Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, according to their spokespeople.Perdue has flown to disaster sites on military aircraft and to remote areas on forest service aircraft, his office said. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao “insists on flying commercial and does so whenever possible,” a department spokeswoman said. In some cases she will use a government plane if security is a concern or if commercial options are not available.Education Secretary Betsy DeVos pays for all of her travel out of pocket, her spokeswoman said, except for one 3 round-trip Amtrak ticket from Washington to Philadelphia paid for by the government. Some bars will close for two weeks starting Tuesday under a new decision by Governor Andy Beshear's office.Starting Tuesday at 5 p.m., freestanding bars will close and restaurants will be limited to 25% capacity indoors. Outside seating can remain as long as social distancing measures are in place.This will be in effect for two weeks, until August 11.During the COVID-19 briefing, Gov.
