LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol Friday promised focused enforcement efforts during the New Year's holiday weekend.The CHP's Maximum Enforcement Period will start at 6:01 p.m. Friday and go through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, when all available officers will be on duty, officials said.``Impairment of any kind while driving is illegal. And rice that he managed to get into the ground is in a "refrigerated state" because of colder than usual temperatures that threaten to reduce yields.Watsonville strawberry farmer Peter Navarro tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that recent wet weather is disrupting his picking schedule and causing a loss of production.Much of California has seen two to five times more precipitation than is normal for this point in May. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who said he was shot in a station parking lot was lying.Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon said at a news conference late Saturday that Wednesday's "reported sniper assault was fabricated" by Angel Reinosa, a 21-year-old deputy.A department statement on Thursday had said a round hit the top of Reinosa's shoulder, damaging his uniform shirt but failing to penetrate his flesh.But Sheriff's Capt. Kent Wegener says no bullets were recovered from the scene and detectives saw "no visible injuries." He says Reinosa eventually admitted making up the story and using a knife to cut the two holes in his shirt.Reinosa has been relieved of his duties and will face a criminal investigation. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A parolee was charged Monday with murdering a 35-year-old research scientist, who was shot while sleeping in a tent during a camping trip in Malibu Creek State Park with his two young children last June, and trying to kill another eight people in the area over a period of two years.Anthony Rauda, 42, is facing one count of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder and five counts of second-degree burglary. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Van Nuys courthouse, but the hearing was postponed to Jan. 22. If convicted as charged, the transient faces a maximum sentence oflife in prison.Rauda is accused of shooting Irvine resident Tristan Thomas Beaudette while the Allergan scientist was in a tent with his daughters about 4:45 a.m. last June 22. The girls, then 2 and 4 years old, were uninjured and are among the attempted murder victims in the complaint.The defendant was arrested Oct. 10 after a series of large-scale manhunts in the area for a rifle-toting culprit suspected in multiple food heists in the Calabasas area. Deputies thought the burglaries might be linked to Beaudette's killing and Rauda was held without bail on suspicion of violating his parole.Prosecutors allege the defendant's attacks date back to at least November 2016, when he's accused of wounding a man sleeping in a hammock in the area of the state park. Less than a week later, Rauda allegedly fired into the sleeping area of a parked vehicle.Four days before Beaudette was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head, authorities allege Rauda shot at a Tesla on La Virgenes Road. He was carrying a rifle when he was arrested in a ravine about a mile-and-a-half north of Mulholland Highway west of Las Virgenes Road in the MalibuCanyon area, after deputies combing the area spotted fresh bootprints and tracked him down, according to the sheriff's department. The arrest came amid a renewed search effort after an early morning burglary at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center, where someone smashed a vending machine and stole food. Investigators quickly linked the break-in to eight other burglaries over the past two years.Authorities alleged Rauda was captured on surveillance video in one of those crimes carrying a rifle and wearing what deputies called ``tactical gear.''The suspect in all of the heists stole food, deputies said, suggesting the man was living off the grid in the wilderness, carrying out the burglaries when he needed sustenance.On Oct. 2, sheriff's officials conducted a large-scale manhunt in the area, but failed to turn up a suspect. Some residents reported hearing gunfire that night.Four days later, a maintenance worker in the Tapia Park area about a mile south of the Malibu Creek State Park campground ``encountered a person who matched the description of the armed commercial burglar,'' Sgt. Matthew Dunn of the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station said then. Dunn said the man asked the park worker for a ride out of the canyon ``because he said there were so many police in the area.''Rauda was sentenced Dec. 13 to six months in jail for gun and ammunition violations, a sentence set to run consecutively with an earlier 160- day sentence for violating parole or violation, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.Rauda has seven prior convictions for weapons violations dating back to 2006, according to the criminal complaint. Then-Sheriff Jim McDonnell said at the time of Rauda's arrest that he also had a history of committing burglaries.Investigators limited information on Beaudette's death, saying it could taint the investigation. The lack of answers to their questions led to confusion and rumors among locals, especially in Monte Nido, a neighborhood just southeast of the entrance of Malibu Creek State Park where some residents said they feared using the park's hiking trails.The Sheriff's Department issued a statement Monday morning saying that investigators believe Rauda acted alone. ``No similar crimes have been reported in the area since (his arrest),'' according to the department. Looking around the room where Hector Barajas spends the majority of his time, you could easily forget you’re in Mexico. American flags, G.I. Joes, and military dog tags line the walls.“I wanted to serve my country,” Barajas recalls, of his decision to join the United States military, where he served 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army from 1995 to 2001.But he sits in Tijuana not by choice.“I was picked up by immigration and deported in 2004,” he said.The phrase “deported veteran” may not be a common part of most people’s vocabulary, but they exist—and there are many.The military does not keep and make public an official count of deported veterans, but the ACLU, which assists deported veterans, including Barajas, estimates the number is easily in the thousands.“One of the most difficult things is being separated from your kids,” Barajas says, referring to his 11-year old daughter who still lives back in California with her mother.  “I try to call her everyday in the mornings when she’s going to school, and we Skype.”Barajas was born in southern Mexico. His parents had crossed the border illegally some time earlier, and when Barajas turned 7, Barajas—along with his sister and a cousin—crossed over to meet them.  They succeeded and spent the majority of their upbringing in southern California.He considers the U.S. his only real home.“It’s where I grew up, it’s where I studied. I did everything in the United States.”It’s also where he took an oath to defend that very same country.But shortly after his enlistment ended in 2001, Barajas says he made a mistake. He was convicted of “shooting at an occupied motor vehicle” and sentenced to prison.  Not long after his release two years later, he was picked up and deported to Mexico.He made it back to the U.S.—“snuck” back home, as he says—and was able to remain until authorities stopped him following a fender bender in 2010. That lead to his re-deportation.He’s been fighting to become a permanent citizen ever since. California Governor Jerry Brown pardoned him last year, erasing that conviction off his record. That, he says, gives him hope that citizenship may not be far off.But in the meantime—and for the last 5 years—Barajas has devoted his time to helping other deported vets. He created the Deported Veterans Support House in Tijuana.“I basically started doing this full time and turning my apartment into a support house [in 2013] and then it just took off from there,” he says smiling.It’s a place where recently deported veterans can get help with benefits, compensations and benefits they may be owed, even medical assistance.He says they’ve had about 40 people in total utilizing the shelter as a temporary place to live. Barajas says one of the hardest parts about being deported is losing your support network and going through it all in what for many of them is a strange land.“When you get deported some of us really don’t know the country that we’re deported to. We may not have been to this country since we were children.”He wants anyone enlisted in the U.S. military to know one thing: just because you have legal permanent resident status and you join the military, it does not guarantee that you will automatically become a citizen. You have to actively pursue citizenship.“When I got my green card, it’s a legal permanent resident card,” Barajas says. “I thought it was permanent. But its not permanent.”As for the crimes he and other veterans may have committed that lead to their deportation, he says every makes mistakes—but they should be allowed to pay their debt to society and remain in the U.S.“Regardless of what these individuals have done they should still be allowed to stay in the U.S. with their families,” he said. Now, the only way he may be guaranteed to get back into the country he calls home is when he dies since he would be eligible for burial at Arlington National Cemetery. 3927
