BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) asked authorities in the nation's major wheat-planting areas to work to achieve quick summer grain harvests in spite of the difficulties posed by the extreme weather.This year's summer harvest has proven more difficult than usual because the ripening of winter wheat has taken place one week later than normal because of the bitterly cold weather last winter, while the consistently heavy rains that recently struck south China have impeded the harvest efforts, the MOA said.The ministry said local authorities should prioritize the harvest work and complete the harvest as quickly as possible.Reaping machine should be distributed properly in different locations to raise the harvesting efficiency, it added. Also, local departments should update information such as weather, market demands, prices and transportation to ensure a smooth harvest, the ministry noted.China's four major grain production areas have shown cautious optimism toward their 2010 summer grain output. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Flood-triggered disasters have killed more than 1,450 Chinese this year, with another 669 missing, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Lingering rainstorms have been slashing provinces including Shaanxi, Sichuan and Jilin this year, triggering floods and landslides, which have affected a population of 200 million and forced more than 12 million to evacuate, according to the ministry.Nearly 13.5 million hectares of crops were affected by heavy rains and floods, with 2.09 million hectares destroyed, while floods have also leveled more than 1.36 million houses.The total economic loss was put at more than 275 billion yuan(40.6 billion U.S dollars), according to the ministry.The central finance authority has recently allocated 195 million yuan to subsidize local governments in those regions worst-hit by natural disasters such as rainstorms and typhoons.The fund, which has been channeled to Jilin, Guangdong, Sichuan and Shaanxi, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will be used in relocating residents, helping people rebuild homes and offering relief for residents who lost family members.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have launched crackdowns all over China to curb online soccer gambling as the 2010 World Cup kicks off in South Africa.More than 100 people have been detained for participating in online soccer gambling with more than 10 billion yuan (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) in funds involved in one case in Yuyao City, east China's Zhejiang Province, said Dong Xiaowei, deputy chief of the provincial public security bureau.More than 70 gambling groups have been cracked for online soccer gambling this year with more than 300 arrested, he said.Similar cases have been uncovered in Beijing, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Fujian and Shandong.There are about 2,000 Chinese and offshore websites for soccer gambling in China, and the membership of some websites amounts to one million, according to Public Security Ministry data.Gambling is prohibited on the Chinese mainland by law.

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said on Thursday China would strive to set up a scientific and effective system for the protection of the country's intangible cultural heritage (ICH).Governments at all levels must take the initiative in safeguarding ICH and, incorporate it into the work agenda and assessment system of officials, said Liu at a ceremony awarding certifications for China's UNESCO ICHs in Beijing.She called for enacting related laws and regulations, as well as resolute measures to prevent the ravaging and destruction of ICHs by over-exploitation for economic purposes, such as tourism.She also called for more funding and international cooperation in safeguarding ICHs.China is a country with a rich cultural heritage. So far, a total of 29 cultural heritage categories have been included in the UNESCO ICH list.
