This week, Felicity Huffman and 13 others agreed to plead guilty in the college admission scandal, hoping to get a lighter prison sentence. But for those standing their ground, including actress Lori Loughlin and more than a dozen others, prosecutors issued additional charges against them. Those charges include fraud and money laundering, which can bring up to 20 years in prison. Justin Paperny, who is dubbed as “prison coach” for his work in helping people prepare for prison life, was hired by several people involved in the college admission scandal to help them get ready to spend time behind bars. “Well they never imagined in a million years they'd be caught up in a federal indictment,” Paperny says of his clients. Paperny’s advice to those involved: if you did it, own it. “If you're a defendant and you're guilty, you should run not walk to the U.S. Attorney's Office,” he says. White collar criminals can easily survive minimum security prison life, Paperny says. His past clients tell him prison isn't even the hardest part. "They've told me, in retrospect, that the easiest part of the sanction was federal prison,” he recalls. “That the time before they went in was incredibly harder."A judge will decide how long each defendant serves, and history shows judges look kindly on plea deals. Sentencing could happen in several weeks, at the earliest. 1378

'Tis the season to shop till you drop, but before you pull out your wallet, check out these tips on saving some cash. No, it’s not through couponing or searching for deals online. It starts with what you do when you walk through the doors of a store. Whether you're aware of it or not, a store is laid out in a very specific way to get you to spend more. Those huge shopping carts are always conveniently placed right as you walk in, but the small baskets seem harder to find. The store's hope is that you'll fill up that shopping cart with more items than if you had a small basket. Gone are the days of stores playing elevator music to create a sense of calmness. Now, it’s all about upbeat music to create a happy atmosphere, hoping you want to stay and shop longer. Just like speed bumps on a road, stores place tables, clothing racks and other obstacles around businesses to get customers to slow down and look at more items. How about those big signs that say, “buy one, get the next one half off?” Seems like a great deal, that is if you’re planning on buying two. If you only need one, buying another half off is still getting you to spend more than you were planning. And when you're ready to try on clothes, don't be tricked by the sale rack that’s usually placed right by the dressing rooms. It's one last chance for stores to get you to pick up more items. Oh and here's one last tip: you're going to see a lot of discount signs with 10, 20 maybe even 50% off an item, but consumer experts say nothing is a deal unless it's 30% off or more. 1561

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees are one group who are expected to work without pay during the shutdown. Now, some of them have been choosing not to come in by calling in sick. Brian Turner, a TSA agent, and his wife are new parents. Thanks to the government shutdown, Turner has no idea when he'll get his next paycheck, and the couple is worried they could run out of money by the end of the month. “We are a paycheck to paycheck family, in the reality of it,” Turner says. “So, we do depend on that constant income.” Turner is considered an essential employee, so he still has to work even though he's not currently getting paid.“When you don't have a paycheck coming in and you don't have a guaranteed source of income when you thought you did, it's disheartening and it kind of makes you feel a little panicked,” he says. For some TSA agents, the shutdown is taking its toll. A growing number of agents are now calling out sick to work other places or to find new jobs. Safety and long lines could become another concern if the shutdown continues. “Poor morale or other issues that could affect the TSA because of the shutdown and not getting paid, that could have some sort of intangible effect on how well they're doing their jobs,” says David Inserra, with the Heritage Foundation. “People are people, and if you're not getting paid, if you're upset, you're probably not going to be doing as good of a job as you otherwise would.” For now, Turner is still going to work. He hopes Congress and President Trump do the same and find a shutdown solution. “You feel hopeless and you feel helpless,” Turner expresses. “I'm not in Washington. I don't have the influence these people of power have, and we rely on them. We elect them to these positions to get a job done.” 1807
