SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thirty years ago, Officer Brian Hardy had an idea. Hardy told his chief, "Chief, I have this crazy idea. Let's put teddy bears in a police car and bring them up to Children's Hospital. I think the kids would really get a kick out of it."Hardy was just a few years into being a member of the Coronado Police Department. He got the idea when, during a visit to Rady Children's Hospital, he noticed the toy collection bin."I asked the nurse at the station there why are there so few toys and she said donations are way down this year. We don't have a lot of toys for the kids in the hospital," said Hardy.Hardy bought the first twelve bears himself. Then, the teddy bear drive started to spread to other law enforcement departments across the county.They have collected as many as 75,000 teddy bears and a huge caravan delivers bears to Rady Children's Hospital every December.Hardy said he'll never forget the impact bringing a little joy to one terminally ill child had on his fellow officers."This little girl was maybe 4, 5 years old and all those cops walked out of there crying their eyes out," said Hardy.A few years later, Hardy found himself on the other side of things when a doctor at Rady told him his 2-year-old daughter's appendix had burst."He said my daughter's very sick she may not make it till morning, but he says, 'We're going to do our best to save her life,'" said Hardy.They did and it happened to be the morning of the teddy bear caravan.Hardy remembered, "It was like an episode of the 'Twilight Zone.' Things were turned around and I was in the hospital and the cops were coming with teddy bears."Hardy has received many thank you notes over the years, but it's what one girl told him a few years ago that has stayed with him."She comes running up full clip and she says, 'You gave me a teddy bear when I was 5 years old,'" Hardy said. He said the young woman now in her 20s told him, "I never forgot that." Now, because of the pandemic, instead of collecting piles of bears, they are encouraging people to donate money to buy bears that go directly to the kids.Officer Hardy is retired now, but still involved and has this message for the many generous donors."If you could see what we see, these children just light up when you bring them these bears," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirty-seven people were charged with drug and firearms trafficking throughout North San Diego County, according to unsealed indictments — in some case, feet away from schools.More than 100 members of the North County Regional Gang Task Force, the FBI SWAT team, and other local agencies arrested 18 of the 37 defendants Wednesday.Heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl and firearms, including a semi-automatic pistol, revolvers, and a two AR-15 style assault rifles, were also seized during the arrests, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of California.Officials said the drugs and firearms being trafficked were stored and sold in North County, including near Libby Lake Park and several schools: Jefferson Middle School, Clair W. Burgener Academy, Mission Elementary School, San Marcos High School, and Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary School.Wednesday's arrests are part of a federal and local investigation into street gangs operating in Encinitas, San Marcos, Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, Escondido, and elsewhere. Many of those arrested reportedly have ties to the Mexican Mafia, officials said.In total, 27 of the 37 being charged are in custody, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are jobs for college students. And then there's Woodstock's Pizza. Woodstock's is not an ordinary college job. "We look at all of our extended employees as part of the Woodstock's family," says Jeff Ambrose, CEO of Woodstock's Pizza. If Woodstock's is a family, then Jeff Ambrose is the Godfather. Ambrose began his career with Woodstock's right out of college back in the early 1980s. He's grown up with the restaurant since his college days at Oregon State doing everything from delivery to management. It was then Jeff learned about treating employees like family from original owner Chuck Woodstock decades ago in Corvallis, Oregon. "Chuck had this vision of having a Woodstock's Pizza in every college town west of the Mississippi," adds Ambrose. Not only that, Jeff was given the opportunity to own 25% of the restaurant. That opportunity for employees to own part of the franchise continues to this day with Jeff. "Because I think it's the right thing to do," Ambrose answers when asked why. In the mid-1980s Chuck Woodstock died in a plane crash. It was Jeff who took over the chain in California including two restaurants here in San Diego. And to this day, his managers have opportunities to buy stock in Woodstock's."That was a big part for me of saying we want to give back," says Ambrose. "I personally need a job that can be flexible with me," says Rios. Yesenia is an engineering student at San Diego State. She started at Woodstock's a couple of years ago making pizzas. Now she's in administration working in the company's I.T. Department.
