SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Volunteers spent Wednesday afternoon putting some TLC into the Balboa Park Carousel.Built over 100 years ago, the carousel has broken down only three times. That's in part due to support from the community and the dedication of Carousel Manager Bill Brown. He started working at the carousel at age 16 and never left.If you'd like to support the carousel, Friends of Balboa Park is seeking donations for a million capital campaign.They hope to fund improvements to the carousel and its building, as well as complete payment of the historic relic.You can donate here. 596

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many people are on the waiting list for a second chance at life.San Diego's organ donation group, Lifesharing, says the city and country are facing an organ shortage. In San Diego alone more than 2,000 people are on the waiting list. "There's never going to be enough organs but more people need to talk about organ donation so there can be more organs," said Lisa Stocks, Lifesharing Executive Director.On Friday, transplant recipients gathered to raise awareness about the issue and celebrate their new birthdays made possible because of organ donation.People can register to become donors on the Lifesharing website or at the DMV.You can also become a living donor by giving someone one of your kidneys. 742

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men convicted of leading a home-invasion robbery spree with five other people were sentenced to prison terms Friday.A judge sentenced 26-year-old Thomas James Smith to 85 years plus 50 years to life in prison and 22-year-old Aaron Rico III to 35 years plus 25 years to life in prison for their roles the series of violent break-ins.Smith and Rico were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault in June. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, many businesses continue to struggle in San Diego County, and some business owners say they can’t afford to pay their rent anymore without their usual income during this pandemic.Landlords are also feeling the effects of the small business struggle.“Many tenants are paying their rents, there aren’t many tenants paying their rents from profits,” said Sandy Sigal, CEO of NewMark Merrill Companies. “We’re not going to make any money or have any profits this year at all, we know that, but we do need enough money to pay our mortgages and lenders.NewMark Merrill Companies own about 80 shopping centers in three states, including California.
