BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A survey conducted by an information center affiliated to Beijing's commerce bureau revealed that retail sales jumped at more than 3,500 stores in the Chinese capital during the 3-day New Year holiday ending Monday, nearly reaching 2.5 billion yuan (about 378 million U.S. dollars), up 17.1 percent from the same period last year.The Beijing Commercial Information Consultation Center surveyed 3,568 stores in Beijing regarding their sales volumes during the past three days, finding that various holiday promotions had brought notable results, pushing up sales to over 2.49 billion yuan.The survey results also showed that consumers in Beijing were passionate about buying gold, since gold prices have kept rising during the past year. Consumers buy gold for investment purposes or to preserve their personal wealth amid the rising Consumer Price Index.Sales volumes at the Caishikou Department Store, which is famous for its gold products, surged 64.1 percent during this holiday from one year earlier.Besides gold, consumers also showed great interest in rabbit-figured toys and commodities with rabbit pictures on them, as 2011 is the year of rabbit in traditional Chinese culture.

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Ramtane Lamamra, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia Gu Xiaojie on Friday signed an agreement on the provision of aid to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).The grant amounting to 30 million RMB, (over 4 million U.S. dollars), will be used to supply equipment and materials for AMISOM. The signing of this agreement comes in the wake of the adoption by the United Nations Security Council, on Dec. 22, of resolution 1964(2010), in which it, inter alia, requested the Secretary- General to continue to provide a logistical support package for AMISOM, for a maximum troop strength of 12,000, as called for by resolution 1863 (2009).In resolution 1964(2010), the Security Council also called on UN Member States and regional and international organizations to make direct bilateral donations in support of AMISOM.By generously providing aid to AMISOM, the People's Republic of China is responding to the call made by the United Nations Security Council and the earlier appeal by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for AU partners to support the ongoing efforts in Somalia, AU said in a statement. Gu Xiaojie reiterated China's continued commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the AU in the area of peace and security and to support all endeavors in this regard. He lauded AU's efforts and resolve towards the promotion of peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Lamamra stated said that "China has, over the years, been providing multifaceted assistance to the AU and African countries as they strive to address the many challenges facing the continent. NANJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- About 5,000 Chinese and foreigners gathered Monday in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, to mourn hundreds of thousands of people who were killed by invading Japanese troops 73 years ago.Participants in the ceremony stood in silent tribute, offered wreaths and bowed in front of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre, with sirens wailing in the drizzling morning on Monday, the 73rd anniversary of the massive slaughter."The Japanese soldiers invaded Nanjing when I was four, and they killed some of my family members. On the anniversary of the massacre every year I would come here to express my grief," said Sun Xuelan, a 77-year-old survivor, who is confined to a wheelchair.Japanese troops occupied Nanjing on Dec. 13, 1937 and began a six-week massacre. Records show more than 300,000 people -- not only disarmed soldiers , but also civilians -- were killed.Mikhalchev Mikhail, deputy director of the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Russia, said, "In the history of human civilization, some facts shouldn't be forgotten, and the Nanjing Massacre was one of them."He noted that the tragedy had become a symbol of the Chinese people's bitter suffering and prompted all people to learn the preciousness of peace.""We should remember the history, but not hatred. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Chile celebrated the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties at a reception here Wednesday.Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong and visiting Chilean president Sebastian Pinera attended the reception, which was held by Chilean Embassy.China was ready to take the opportunity of this anniversary to push forward Sino-Chilean relations, Liu said when addressing the reception.Noting Chile was the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic ties with China, Liu said the Chinese government attached great importance to developing the bilateral ties from strategic perspective.Pinera, on his first China visit since taking office as Chilean president in March, expressed the willingness to expand cooperation and friendship with China, and he hailed the progress made in bilateral cooperation since the two countries forged ties in 1970.Chile is China's second biggest trade partner in Latin America and China is Chile's biggest trade partner.
