SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The warmest ocean temperatures on record are making things interesting for San Diego’s fishermen.Local fisherman say they are seeing more game fish closer to the coast than even before.“2018 is a season that has been off the charts,” said Frank Ursitti, the owner of H & M Landing.Scientists recorded ocean temperatures at more than 80 degrees last week.Ursitti says his tours are lining in more dorado, yellowtail, yellowfin and bluefin this time of year than usual.  “Often time times anglers or recreational fisherman will have to venture 8 to 15 days at seas for certain kinds of fish,” said Ursitti, “but now some of anglers are venturing just 12 hours offshore for the fish of a lifetime.”Fisherman Magnum Scuro says they have all noticed the warmer waters, but he is curious for what may be it consequences next year.“There are some negative things that can happen with the warm water - it can kill the kelp,” said Scuro, “ (the) hot water is going to expose a lot of areas where there hasn’t been kelp so we can get to it, but there’s going to be be a lot of kelp that’s going to be gone.” 1151

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) The two-year-old twin girls who were in a truck that sped off of Sunset Cliffs Saturday are recovering. That’s according to a family friend who started a GoFundMe campaign to help the twins’ mother with any expenses related to the crash.“She’s a great mother, she’s sticking strong through all of this, the girls are doing good,” said family friend Adrianna Lopez. “Money should be the last thing she needs to worry about, it’s just about keeping herself sane through all of this, her kids their health, mental, physical, everything.”Lopez and a family member tell 10News the girls are now stable. She said the twins just turned two years old in May.On Saturday, the toddlers were riding in a truck that San Diego Police say was driven by their father.Officers were warned to be on the lookout for a suicidal man threatening to drive off of the Coronado Bridge.Cellphone GPS data located the father, now identified as 47-year-old Robert Brians, at Sunset Cliffs.SDPD K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese was close by and jumped into action after the truck went over the cliffside. He and other first responders were able to save the twins and Brians.“The action that the first responders did, we’re just forever grateful, forever grateful,” said Lopez.Brians was arrested for two counts of attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping, one count of burglary, and two counts of child cruelty. The San Diego District Attorney’s office said is has until Wednesday to make a filing decision. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A fire on the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego started Sunday morning and as of Monday afternoon, continues to burn, adding smoke to the sky and raising concerns over air quality in San Diego.Related: USS Bonhomme Richard fire: 57 treated for injuries after fire erupts aboard Naval Base San Diego shipBill Brick is the Chief of Monitoring and Technical Services Division at the Air Pollution Control District and said there are concerns in some areas but not everywhere. He said they have received reports of people smelling the smoke as far away as Oceanside and Escondido. According to Brick, those people who are farther away may be able to smell the smoke but the particulate matter is less concentrated, so it should not pose a health risk.He said the people who should be aware of health concerns are those nearby the fire who end up directly in the path of the smoke due to wind and also those with prior health concerns such as asthma, lung or heart problems. He said if anyone is close enough to smell the smoke and also gets irritated eyes, they should also be aware that there could be health risks. For any of those people, he advises to avoid exercise, go inside and close the windows to avoid breathing in that air.Brick also said that a problem with this fire is they don’t know exactly what has burned. While the Navy has said they are still within EPA standards, Brick said the focus has been on fighting the fire so it has been hard for them to determine everything that has burned. Brick said they did take samples of the air to see if anything toxic is in the air, but those results will not come back for a few days, so he advises everyone to use caution while the fire still burns. 1751
