President Donald Trump tweeted early Friday morning he and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus. "Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19," Trump tweeted. RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom says he wants a Southern California county to reimpose stay-home orders amid a surge in positive coronavirus tests there and through much of the state. Imperial County, with a population of 175,000 people on the state’s border with Mexico, has been the slowest in the state to reopen. "Some counties, like Imperial, haven't been able to move into that attestation process, because they can't meet that criteria," Newsom said of the county's struggle to reopen. "We reserve the right to toggle back if we don't see movement at the local level."Newsom said the state is working with the county to send additional resources to help local officials address coronavirus cases. Despite this, the governor said interventions are not making enough of an impact, leading to reinstituting the stay-at-home order.The county's positivity rate has averaged 23% in the last week, compared with 5.7 % percent statewide. Newsom said there is also a need to decompress the county's hospital system, which other counties have helped do by accepting patients."I just sent 76 ventilators down to Imperial County. (AP) — A couple whose flattened trailer tire accidentally started a massive fire in Northern California has received more than 100 cards and letters with supportive messages telling them not to feel guilty.The outpouring of support for an 81-year-old man and his wife started after Rachel Pilli made a Facebook post offering to forward compassionate messages to the couple, the Record Searchlight in Redding, California, reported Wednesday.Pilli doesn't know the couple, but said a firefighter who knows them told her the woman blames herself and cries day and night. Republican Rick Saccone's campaign has instructed the four counties in Pennsylvania's 18th District to preserve ballots and voting machines, a first step in preparation for a potential recount following the close special election.With election day over and absentee ballots counted, Saccone trailed Democrat Conor Lamb by 627 votes in a district where President Donald Trump won by 20 points. But Saccone had not yet conceded the race Wednesday and now appears poised to challenge the result.Automatic recounts are not mandated in Pennsylvania congressional races, according to the state law. There is a process in place, however, for Saccone's supporters to request a recount when the counties have all the provisional and overseas military ballots and they have been counted.An attorney representing Saccone's campaign notified elections offices in Westmoreland, Washington, Green and Allegheny counties Wednesday of the preservation request, setting a 2 p.m. deadline for responses, according to letters obtained by CNN. All four counties complied, said Matt Gorman, a spokesperson National Republican Congressional Committee.The campaign is also challenging Allegheny County officials over the initial exclusion of one of its attorneys from the vote count, according to a letter to the county from Kathleen Gallagher, the attorney representing the campaign.
