Raymond Orosa, his wife Jordan Chan, and their kids were celebrating her birthday on July 4th at the Lucia Restaurant & Bar in Carmel Valley, when they say a white man started yelling racist things about Asians.The incident was captured on a video that shows the man cursing and hurling racist insults and the server ordering him to leave."Trump is going f*ck you," the man is heard telling the group. "You f*cking Asian piece of sh*t.""The man in the video is Michael Lofthouse, a CEO of Bay Area-based cloud computing startup Solid8.In a statement issued to media, Lofthouse admits making the comments and says he will be reflecting on his behavior.“My behavior in the video is appalling,” the statement read. “This was clearly a moment where I lost control and made incredibly hurtful and divisive comments. I would like to deeply apologize to the Chan family. I can only imagine the stress and pain they feel. I was taught to respect people of all race and I will take the time to reflect on my actions and work to better understand the inequality that so many of those around me face every day.”The video was published on Instagram earlier this week by a family member who attended the party. (KGTV) — Six prison guards were injured during an attack by an inmate this week, leading to the use of deadly force.Calipatria State Prison inmate Douglas Compton refused to leave an "out-of-bounds" area in the prison's yard on Thursday after three officers ordered him to do so, according to the state's Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR).Compton then stabbed one of the officers in the head and face, CDCR says. Responding officers used batons, pepper spray, and other use-of-force options to try and subdue Compton.During the struggle, Compton punched another two officers.An officer in an observation tower discharged one lethal round from a rifle to stop the attack. No one was injured by the use of lethal force, CDCR says.Six officers were injured and taken to an outside hospital for treatment and released.Compton was injured and treated, before being transferred to another prison.CDCR added that two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene. CDCR investigators are investigating the weapons as well as the use of deadly force.Compton was sentenced to 112 years to life in prison following a 2013 conviction of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter with the use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon with the use of an altered ID. 1315

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It all started with a high school assignment.Megan O’Grady says she had to write about a topic that she felt passionate about in her life.As the daughter of a law enforcement officer who had recently learned of the deaths of five officers during a 2016 protest in Dallas, it wasn’t hard for her to share what she was feeling at the time.That paper would soon turn into a passion project and the nonprofit, Blue Line Bears.Four years later, the group has dispersed more than 700 teddy bears - sewn with the uniforms of fallen law enforcement officers and given to loved ones that have been left behind.“Taking that uniform shirt and making it into something that can be held and cuddled...it gives them comfort and a little bit of their loved one back,” the 18-year-old tells FOX 4.She says prior to this year, Blue Line Bears filled five to ten requests per week from agencies across the country.“Now, it can be up to like 20 or 30”.Megan’s father is Master Sergeant Patrick O’Grady with the Cape Coral Police Department.He says agencies from all over reach out to the group for bears.O’Grady says they also use the website Officer Down Memorial Page to keep track of impacted families.According to the site, there was 148 line of duty deaths in 2019.This year and at the time of this story, the website reports that the number is already 247.The site says most of those deaths are related to COVID-19 and gunfire.“At any time, we can have over 100 shirts waiting to be turned into bears,” O’Grady says.With an increase in demand comes the need for an increase in space.That’s why the nonprofit is now expanding to an official location in Cape Coral.Megan says the new space will serve as a place to hold meetings and a go-to location for the community to purchases merchandise.She says she's most excited that it will also provide a bigger workspace to prepare the keepsakes that bring support to many families.Because as Megan, now in her first year of college, says, “There’s always a lot of bears to be made.”The O'Gradys say the new location will be complete by the end of the year.The address for the new storefront is 3032 Santa Barbara Boulevard.Click here for more information about Blue Line Bears.This story was first reported by Shari Armstrong at WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida. 2315

CHICAGO, Ill. – A new law in Illinois allows prosecutors to charge you with aggravated battery if you assault a retail worker who’s enforcing mask requirements.The enhancement is part of a bill that Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law to expand workplace protections and support essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.Senate Bill 471 adds a penalty for assaulting or battering a retail worker who is conveying public health guidance, such as requiring patrons to wear face-coverings or promoting social distancing.The bill amends Illinois’ criminal code and provides that battery of a merchant is aggravated battery, which is normally a felony in the state.“This provision sends the message that it’s vitally important for workers to be both respected and protected while serving on the frontlines,” the governor’s office wrote in a press release.The legislation comes after several reports of people attacking workers who ask them to wear masks, like a recent instance at a New Jersey Staples store.The law also increases paid disability leave for any injury that occurs after March 9, 2020 by 60 days for firefighters, law enforcement and paramedics whose recovery was hindered by COVID-19. 1205
