SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A bizarre series of events led to a woman visiting San Diego with her family, getting attacked in a Hyatt Hotel lobby by a stranger running from a crash scene. Construction workers tell 10News they witnessed a man drive recklessly through a Mission Bay construction zone around 5 a.m., almost striking vehicles.The workers say they jumped in their truck and followed the driver down Quivira Road hoping to get his license plate information.Instead, they say the driver made a U-turn and crashed into their truck and a parked car. The driver’s car immediately burst into flames, but he wasn’t done just yet.According to the construction workers, the man then ran from the scene toward the Hyatt Hotel in Mission Bay.They say they chased him on foot, and held him down in the hotel lobby, waiting for police to arrive.Witnesses tell 10News that’s when the man got away and attacked a woman who was in the lobby checking out of the hotel.The woman’s husband told 10News the man tackled her then put her in the choke hold. The victim’s mother said she believes the suspect was trying to kill her daughter.The victim, her husband and parents were visiting San Diego from Minnesota. They were scheduled to continue their vacation by flying out to Hawaii this morning.They have to reschedule the trip because the victim was taken to the hospital.Police arrested the suspect. They say his motive is unclear.Investigators have not yet determined if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash. 1547

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family killed in a Logan Heights house fire in October was laid to rest Friday.Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, and daughter Iris, 21, all died from their injuries following the Oct. 13 fire.Funeral services were held at Saint Anthony of Padua in National City Friday morning.RELATED: Family's oldest son charged in Logan Heights house fire deathsTwo other surviving family members, Wendy and Angel, were out of the hospital and in attendance.After the church service, a funeral procession drove by the house the family once called home. Loved ones shared a moment in front of a memorial placed outside of the charred, boarded-up house on Clay Avenue.Friends of Mayo-Cortes described her as a hardworking mother who went through many hardships but was always resilient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A former San Diego County Sheriff’s Captain pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday to illegally trafficking firearms.In a gray suit and a mask, Marco Garmo made his way into the downtown courthouse. ABC10 News’ cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, where Garmo stood before the judge and pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in dealing firearms without a license.The case stems from last year's bombshell allegations that five defendants including Garmo, prominent jeweler Leo Hamel, and former Sheriff's Lieutenant Fred Magana were involved in a massive gun running operation.ABC10 News was there as agents raided Leo Hamel's Fine Jewelers in Old Town.Hamel and Magana were charged with working with Garmo to re-sell guns and falsify records. Both have since pleaded guilty.The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that the cases for the other two defendants are still pending.According to prosecutors, Garmo used his position to buy and re-sell guns that are intended only for law enforcement, not the general public, so-called off roster guns. Over six years, investigators say he sold more than 100 firearms for cash or to collect favors from those who might support him in a future run for San Diego Sheriff.Garmo faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of 0,000 and supervised release for up to three years. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 9th. 1425

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A ceremony was held Wednesday to honor San Diego County law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.87 names were read at noon at the memorial wall at the County Administration Building in downtown San Diego.The fallen law enforcement officers named date back to 1850, and they include San Diego police Officer Jonathan “JD” De Guzman, who was killed in the line of duty in 2016.“They did it because they loved it. They did it because they cared, and it’s just so important that those people, the survivors, know that the citizens appreciate what they did,” said Skip Murphy with the San Diego County Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation.The public joined the memorial on the northwest lawn of the County Administration Building and quietly paid respects.The San Diego Police Department is also holding a memorial ceremony Thursday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellationThe camp was canceled, but days later Mayor Faulconer issued a statement saying the camp would go on. The girls are thankful the camp is back on.
