SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pride Month comes to a close, the San Diego Unified School District is working to make sure LGBTQ students feel supported year-round. The district's curriculum is becoming more inclusive. School can be a tough time for many students, including those who identify with the LGBTQIA community."In a 2017 report, a national study, 82% of our LGBTQ students reported hearing anti-LGBTQ remarks," says Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "Seven in 10 reported being called names or threatened during their school day."Gloria spearheaded Assembly Bill 493. It would mandate LGBTQ identity training for educators, grades 7-12. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law last fall.Although school is out for summer break, the San Diego Unified School District is showing its support. The Pride and Transgender flags, among others, were raised outside of the district's office.SDUSD has implemented a curriculum that will help teachers and students. Each module contains four lessons. It comes equipped with terminology and LGBTQIA history."What we found out as a district, is that these students are hearing about these issues and these people for the first time because a lot of our educators have been ill-prepared to have these discussions in classrooms," says Ebonee Weathers with the Youth Advocacy Dept.Weathers also notes that it's important for educators to build relationships and empower students, so they feel safe and comfortable in school settings. 1478

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Border Patrol agents arrested a man after finding more than million worth of narcotics inside his car.According to the agency, the incident began around 4 a.m. on October 4 when the 21-year-old man, a US citizen, entered the I-8 checkpoint. As agents questioned the man, a K-9 alerted authorities to the vehicle. After searching the car, agents found 36 wrapped packages under the driver’s side front tire. The brick-shaped packages were later found to contain 84 pounds of cocaine and four pounds of fentanyl pills.“Criminal organizations go to great lengths to conceal and smuggle dangerous narcotics in order to make millions of dollars. This is done without regard to the health and safety of our communities. I am proud of our Border Patrol agents’ vigilant efforts to keep this poison off our streets,” Acting Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel said.Since October 1, San Diego Border Patrol Agents have seized 491 pounds of cocaine, 7,169 pounds of methamphetamine, 178 pounds of heroin, and 383 pounds of fentanyl. 1056

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas. It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas. The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Attention is now turning to the southern border after Wednesday's border closure with Canada. On Thursday, the walkway into Tijuana was nearly empty but the San Ysidro Port of Entry remains open, for the time being. “It's going to have major implications for us, particularly for us here in Southern California, if we see a closing of the U.S.-Mexico border,” says Dr. David Shirk with the University of San Diego, where he works as a professor with an area of expertise in U.S.-Mexico relations. RELATED: Senate GOP to unveil stimulus plan that includes ,200 payments for most AmericansShirk says that if the U.S. proceeds with any closure, not only will families be separated, but there will also be a major shortage of supplies like foods that are harvested in Baja and transported north. “Something that the federal government needs to take into consideration is that our economy is critically interlinked with Mexico,” he adds.As of Thursday morning, there were only 118 reported cases of COVID-19 in Mexico. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been criticized in recent days for not taking enough containment measures. Video on the Washington Post's website shows him shaking hands at a big rally last Saturday and kissing a supporter. RELATED: San Diego County Westfield malls close 'majority of its operations' amid outbreakThursday, he tweeted out from a press conference to act calmly, disseminate official information and adopt hygiene measures. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that he has requested for the State of Baja to adopt the same precautionary measures that are being taken in San Diego. This Wednesday, the Mayor of Tijuana decided to cancel events with more than 100 people. Schools in Tijuana are reportedly now closed. RELATED: San Diego and national closures, cancellations, postponements due to COVID-19Shirk says Mexico has likely been slower to respond to the pandemic out of fears over its own economy. “I think there's real concern in the López Obrador Administration that an overly drastic response to the coronavirus crisis could cripple Mexico's economy and that has to do with the fact that for the last couple of years Mexico's growth rate has basically remained about flat," Shirk. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sent 10News a statement about any possible plans for a border closure:“What we can say right now is that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) highest priority is to ensure the health, safety and security of our workforce and the American people. CBP agents and officers will maintain situational awareness while identifying individuals who have traveled from or transited through countries affected by COVID-19. CBP continues to process cargo as there has been no identified threat as it relates to cargo shipments.CBP officers use a combination of traveler history records, questioning, observation, and self-declarations to further identify individuals requiring enhanced health screening by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, all CBP ports of entry are following the same operational guidance as issued by Presidential Proclamations and the Department of Homeland Security. If CBP observes a traveler with symptoms of COVID-19, we will refer them to the (CDC) and or DHS medical contractors for enhanced health screening. CDC personnel are responsible for the enhanced health screening of travelers in all locations nationwide.CBP has issued guidance to all employees that outlines the current comprehensive use of Personal Protective Equipment including guidance regarding wearing masks in the appropriate circumstances.
