CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - Chula Vista police are searching for a possible arsonist after two brush fires burned part of Otay river bottom Friday afternoon. Fire crews responded around 2 in the afternoon to the area south of Main Street and east of Broadway. While crews were working to put out the fire, they received a call of a second fire in the same location. The second fire presented more difficulties because of its location. Batallion Chief David Albright tells 10News, "it was kind of down in the slough, in the river bottom, so we were able to bring in a helicopter and make some water drops". Multiple water drops were made and fire crews had both fires out within an hour. Chula Vista police are continuing their search for a possible arsonist. They believe there could be a connection to one of the homeless individuals living near the Otay River bottom. San Diego County sheriffs also sent up their helicopter to look for a suspect in the brush but were unsuccessful. 985

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -Students and parents in the South Bay are demanding the Sweetwater Union High School District bring back their buses.In a cost-cutting move, the district announced last May that it would eliminate dozens of bus routes throughout the district. Four of the district's high schools were impacted. Eastlake and Olympian High Schools each lost four routes, Otay Ranch lost one, but San Ysidro High School took the biggest hit; with twenty out of twenty-two routes cut.Olga Espinoza attended Monday night's school board. She said her son has to walk more than three miles each way to get to school. She said it's simply not safe."Since we are on the border, I feel like he could get kidnapped. It's a really dark road, there's no benches, no water, there's coyotes out there, tarantulas, bugs, it's not a nice road for children to be walking, " Espinoza said. A couple dozen parents and students marched into the meeting holding cardboard school buses. They chanted, "Cut from the top, not our buses!" Many of them were with The San Ysidro Students United and Madres Unidas. A district spokesman said school leaders are trying to address their concerns. "We are not in terms of putting back any routes because the policy does stand in terms of our 3 and a half mile polic, but we are looking at potentially adding a couple of routes that will support some of the routes that currently exist, part of the issue is drivers, we don't have the drivers," said Communications Director Manny Rubio. Rubio estimated roughly seven-hundred students use buses, and that included kids who live right down the street from their school. He also said enrollment and attendance are up this year at San Ysidro High School. Parents paid 0 for a bus pass, but Rubio said the cost to the district was closer to ,000 a student."We're one of the few districts who still offers home to school transportation, even San Ysidro Elementary, which is right down the street, does not offer home to school transportation," said Rubio.Routes for special education students are not impacted.The district also said it would not have made the cuts without the completion of Old Otay Mesa Road which was finished in May. 2223

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - After a series of fires, Chula Vista Police have begun the process of clearing people out of the Otay Mesa River Valley. Tuesday morning, members of the CVPD Homeless Outreach Team handed out vacate notices to people living in the area. Several fires have broken out in the river bed recently, requiring large responses from local fire agencies. Chula Vista Police said after people have been moved out, they will begin clearing brush. (KGTV) - Loved ones are grieving the COVID-19 death of a South Bay great-grandfather, while his wife fights for her life on a ventilator.George Torres, 67, first started feeling sick in early November."He had a headache, diarrhea, and shortness of breath," said his daughter Rachel Cedillos.Cedillos says his symptoms got worse and in mid-November. George was taken to the ER, tested positive for COVID-19 and placed on a ventilator one day later.Several days later, his wife of 49 years, Alma came down with her own symptoms. By the end of the month, both of Cedillos' parents were on a ventilator.On December 3, George Torres, a grandfather of nine and a great-grandfather, passed away."Oddly enough, I felt panic. Didn't know what to do. All I could do was just cry," said a tearful Cedillos.Cedillos says her father was always joking and laughing, and made everyone feel comfortable."The friendliest man. The greatest man to talk to about anything ... He was silly almost all the time ... He loved, loved his grandchildren," said Cedillos.He worked as a part-time handyman and Lyft driver seven days a week. Cedillos isn't sure how her father contracted the virus, but says he was diligent about masks, for himself, and his passengers."If they refused, he would refuse to give them a ride," said Cedillos.As COVID-19 cases continue to grow, Cedillos makes this urgent appeal."Please, please be careful. Be responsible. Wear a mask," said Cedillos.As for Cedillo's mother, Cedillos says she's performed well on recent breathing tests, and is hopeful she'll recover. Alma does not yet know her husband has passed."It’s extremely painful knowing we have to tell her weren’t she wakes up," said Cedillos.George did not have any underlying conditions.
