Police are warning about a terrifying phone scam where the person on the other end of the phone says they are holding a family member for ransom.One woman said she received one of these calls and it was the most frightening call she ever received.Natalie Bruser was heading home from work when her cellphone rang from a number she did not recognize."I answered, and it sounded like one of my kids crying, and I couldn't figure out who it was," said Bruser, who has three children. "They were crying super hard, and so I was hysterical."The sobbing young woman said she had been kidnapped. Bruser thought it sounded most like her daughter Nicole, who is in her 20s."It seems that a black Suburban pulled up, and people got out with guns," she said. "And Nicole started screaming."A man then got on the phone and said if Bruser wanted to see her daughter again, she needed to drive over at a gas station off Interstate 75 in Springboro, and get money from an ATM.The man said police were on their tail, and then he told Bruser to stay on the phone and not call 9-1-1. The man also said Bruser needed to act quickly or they would harm her daughter, who appeared to be still crying in the background."She was crying heavily," Bruser said. "And I said, 'Nicole, please calm down. I need to hear your voice. I need to really hear that you're OK.'"But it was all a scam.Luckily, Bruser was able to yell for help, and someone nearby called the police. Officers quickly sorted the situation out.It turned out that there was no black SUV with armed men inside, there was no police car in pursuit, and as for Bruser's daughter Nicole, she was home resting."I'm freaking out at this point. I don't know if they have her hostage or not," Bruser said. "So Springboro police actually went and banged on her door, and she was sleeping, and so here she was safe at home."How the scam worksIt's called the "virtual kidnapping scam."According to police, the caller is not local and does not even know your son or daughter's name. But panicked parents will grab hundreds of dollars, then run to the nearest Western Union desk to wire money for the release of their child.Reports from around the country say this is a very effective scam. The scammers usually tell their victims to stay on the phone and not let anyone know what is going on or they will harm their child.As for the black Chevy Suburban filled with kidnappers carrying guns, the scammers have seen action movies where this is a common trope.In a moment of panic however, it's easy to miss all the holes in the caller's story.So be suspicious of any strange phone calls that appear to be from a family member in distress. Parents and guardians looking to keep kids entertained this summer reportedly helped boost sales of LEGO sets. The company’s second quarter report shows a 14 percent increase in sales during the first half of 2020 over the same time period last year.“During the first half, we saw the benefits of our investments in long-term growth initiatives such as e-commerce and product innovation,” the LEGO Group CEO, Niels B. Christiansen said in a statement.He also thanked employees and colleagues who did “everything they could to stay safe and bring play to children and families around the world.”Despite citing growth in e-commerce, LEGO is planning to open dozens of new stores yet this year.The toy company announced they are still on track to open 120 new stores in 2020, with about 80 of them based in China. PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Drivers continue to share stories of scary moments and narrow escapes as there are more reports of Kia Souls catching fire.New complaints led I-Team Investigator Jackie Callaway to ask why some vehicles weren't included in the automaker's past recalls for engine fire risks.Brek Badgley says his 2015 Kia Soul burst into flames while rolling down I-75 northbound in Hernando County last December. He said the fire gutted the entire vehicle within minutes.“Just tossed my phone out of the window and started throwing stuff out of the car,” Badgley said.In April 2019, Kia recalled nearly 380,000 Kia Souls made between 2012 and 2016 over a defect that they say could cause a fire. We checked Brek’s VIN and found his Soul wasn't included in that recall.The I-Team discovered not every Soul made during those years was taken off the road. Kia says that's because even within the same model year, vehicles can have different equipment.Shelly Parks' 2015 Kia Soul was among those not recalled. Parks says it caught fire as she drove near Columbus, Ohio, last summer."We hear someone yell fire, and by the time we had noticed anything, there was fire coming from underneath the car," Parks said.She told the I-Team the car was still rolling to a stop when both she and her friend jumped out.“I watched the car roll past me on fire."The I-Team also found 2018 Kia Souls catching fire, according to three reports filed with federal regulators. Kia reports these Soul fires are rare and can be caused by any number of factors not related to engine defects.In August, 34-year-old Jordan Carlton died of his injuries a year after his rented 2019 Kia Soul went up in flames as he drove down a Hawaiian highway. PAGE, Ariz. – A man died Sunday after authorities say he fell off a cliff overlooking the Colorado River in Arizona.The National Park Service (NPS) says 25-year-old Orlando Serrano-Arzola of Phoenix fell at the Glen Canyon Dam Overlook around 9 a.m. The overlook is located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area near Page.Witnesses told NPS that the victim was taking pictures on top of the rim overlooking the river when he fell about 100 feet and then slid about 150 more feet.Serrano-Arzola suffered severe trauma and showed no signs of life after the fall, according to NPS.A Coconino County sheriff’s deputy rappelled to the victim at 9:27 a.m. and confirmed the victim was deceased. The body was then transported to a medical examiner’s office in Flagstaff for an autopsy.While recovering the body, NPS says officers discovered bones at the base of the overlook that have been determined to be human remains. Officials didn't provide further information about the bones.Serrano-Arzola’s death and the discovery of the remains are under investigation by the National Park Service, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. 1179
