SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Keep an eye out for two new residents at the San Diego Zoo - two penguin chicks named Lucas and Dot. The three-month-old penguin chicks will reside in the Cape Fynbos habitat with a colony of 29 adult penguins. After weeks of careful planning—including providing the chicks with a private pool, where they learned how to swim the hand raised penguins got to see their new home. The two juveniles immediately started swimming and climbing rocks, while keepers vigilantly monitored their progress. Animal care staff said the initial introduction went very smoothly and the birds behaved exactly as keepers had hoped, but they plan to allow only closely monitored interactions for the next few days.“We will be pulling [Lucas and Dot] back at night,” said Debbie Denton, keeper. “We don’t want to leave them out unsupervised yet. We just want to give them a few days out here with the rest of the colony, and make sure that they are comfortable enough to do OK on their own overnight.”Lucas and Dot were hatched in San Diego from eggs supplied though a breeding loan by the Minnesota Zoo, which has successfully hatched more than 24 eggs since opening its African penguin habitat in 2011.    Guests can visit Lucas and Dot at their home in the Cape Fynbos habitat, inside Africa Rocks at the Zoo.    1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local VFW posts are bracing for the new restrictions to kick-in on Saturday.The restrictions result from an increase in COVID-19 cases in the county, putting the county in the state's purple tier, the tier with the toughest covid-19 related restrictions.Mike Hill, the post commander at VFW 5985 in Pacific Beach, says they are already struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic because of the restrictions."There are 22 VFW posts and more American Legion posts through San Diego County, and all of us rely on having events and having people coming to our canteen, which is sort of military for a bar and spend money there, and that helps support us," Hill said. "We've eaten up most of our savings to pay the bills while we've been closed."He says they have relied on donations so far and will be needing more the longer the pandemic lasts."I will tell you the members, and I will be dialing for dollars," Hill said. He says they will start within their members first, then the community."We'll reach out to the community and hope that some of them will value this place that's been in the community for 90 years and let it still be a home for veterans to be around other veterans," he said.VFW 5985 has been closed most days except Tuesdays and Fridays to make meals for dozens of veterans, their families, and those who need it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Maintenance crews were hard at work at UC San Diego Tuesday fortifying campus buildings ahead of the rainstorms expected this week, all while several dorms continued to dry out from the last one.Workers shored up roofs and deployed straw wattles and 200 sandbags near the Marshall Lower Apartments. The university said 12 to 15 dorms flooded last week during torrential rain.UC San Diego said drains near the apartment complex were overwhelmed by the water and debris.RELATED: UC San Diego students reeling from flooded dorms after storm“We conducted additional drain and area inspections of the Lower apartments in advance of the rain,” the university said in a message to residents. “[Housing, Dining and Hospitality] maintenance staff will be on standby to ensure that everything holds and storm drains remain clear.”The National Weather Service said a flash flood warning will be in effect Wednesday morning through Thursday evening in coastal areas and the inland valleys.The bulk of the rain is expected to hit Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. Rainfall totals through Friday could reach 1.5 to 2 inches in coastal areas and up to 3 inches in the San Diego County mountains, NWS meteorologist Miguel Miller said.UC San Diego maintenance crews were still trying to dry out some of the dorms that flooded with fans Tuesday, meaning some students have to contend with the hum of dehumidifiers while studying for midterms.RELATED: What you need to know about San Diego's Thanksgiving holiday storm“The dehumidifiers were kind of loud, but it was a constant sound so I got used to it,” said one student.Another student, Jason Rose, said not only did his apartment building flood, his car did too.
