ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - A Frost Advisory was issued for San Diego County Valleys, prompting three key preparations to protect your pets, pipes and plants. The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday, in cities including Escondido, El Cajon, San Marcos, La Mesa, Santee, and Poway.Ways to protect your plants is wrapping them before sundown, to retain heat, and watering trunks of trees with warm water the next morning.Wrapping pipes in towels to retain heat keeps them from freezing. In areas that see a hard freeze, leaving the faucet dripping overnight is one way to keep the pipes from freezing.Always remember to bring pets indoors. If you have a community cat, they do need shelter. The Humane Society explains what you can do to help. 774

Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals has been considered one of the best players in hockey for the last decade. But despite his incredible skill, he has had little to show for his success in the playoffs. That is until this season. Ovechkin scored the go-ahead goal in Wednesday's pivotal Game 7 matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The goal ended up being the only one Washington needed in its 4-0 shutout over the Lightning to win the best-of-seven series 4-3. The victory earns Ovechkin his first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. It also only the second time the Capitals have reached the Final. "I can’t explain my emotions. I am just happy for my boys. I can’t wait to come back home and play for a Stanley Cup," Ovechkin said. It was a tough road for Washington to just its second conference title. Washington had to come from behind in all three series during the playoffs. The road to the Stanley Cup Final was a bit easier for Vegas. The Golden Knights clinched their spot in the Stanley Cup Final last Sunday, defeating Winnipeg for the Western Conference title. Vegas beat all odds reaching the Final, as it was the first expansion club to even reach the playoffs in the expansion era. Vegas used a hodgepodge of leftover pieces from the rest of the NHL to build a roster good enough to overpower the rest of the conference. The Golden Knights turned role players like ex-Columbus Blue Jackets forward William Karlsson and former Florida Panthers winger Jonathan Marchessault into bona fide stars this season. 1619

A woman is accused of breaking into a Paradise Valley home, bathing in the homeowner’s bathtub, and sending tens of thousands of disturbing text messages to the man’s phone after the pair went on one date.In July 2017, 31-year-old Jacqueline Ades was found parked outside of the victim’s home, police said. The man also accused her of repeatedly texting him, despite him saying he no longer wanted to talk to her. Officers found Ades still outside the victim’s home when they arrived and told her to leave, officials said. Shortly after, the man started to receive threatening text messages from the suspect. Police received a similar report in December from the same residence, but officers were unable to locate her.On April 8, the victim called a detective a third time, saying he was out of the country, but saw Ades in his home while checking his home surveillance video. When officers arrived at the home, the woman was taking a bath, police said. A large butcher knife was discovered on the passenger’s seat of her car, court paperwork said. She was taken into custody and charged with trespassing. After Ades was released from jail, she allegedly started sending more threatening text messages to the victim — some of the messages alluded that “harm may come to him,” authorities said.Less than three weeks later, the victim called authorities to report receiving multiple threatening text messages from her, court documents said. The man also explained that they met on a dating website, and after one date Ades began stalking and harassing him.Ades allegedly sent about 65,000 text messages to the man’s phone. The victim said that she sent about 500 text messages to him a day, court documents said. In one of Ades' messages, she allegedly stated, “…Don’t ever try to leave me…I’ll kill you...I don't wanna be a murderer." She also said that she wanted to wear his body parts and bathe in his blood, court paperwork said.On May 4, police were called to a business in Scottsdale after passersby reported Ades "acting irrationally and claiming to be the owner's wife," police said. The owner of the business is the Paradise Valley homeowner.Ades was arrested on Tuesday on charges of threatening, stalking and harassment. While being questioned by police, the suspect explained that she sent the man text messages all day but he never responded, court documents said. She said that she threatened him because she was worried he had called police to report her behavior. The woman is also accused of admitting that she threatened him because she didn’t want him to leave and because she loved him, court paperwork said. She allegedly admitted to knowing her statements were “crazy” and plans to return to Florida once she's released. 2792

According to the National Catholic Educational Association, 50 percent more catholic schools closed around the country than in previous years, in large part to the pandemic. The NCEA says around 150 catholic schools have closed their doors for good since the start of 2020, whereas around 75 to 100 have closed each year over the course of the last decade.“Income has certainly been diminished, which not only affects the functions of our parishes but also of our Catholic schools,” said Bishop Gerald Kicanas.Kicanas is the head of the board of the NCEA and says the catholic church has seen funding diminish for years as religion’s role in society has lessened. He says the economic hardships endured by families since COVID-19 was the last straw for many parishes who have been fighting to stay afloat.“People’s own resources are more limited. Many people are out of work and this is a deep concern for the church,” said Kicanas. “In many ways, religion has been marginalized in our society, I think that’s true. On the other hand, I think a parent has a deep concern that their child grows up with strong values and an appreciation of what is morally right in living one’s life.”According to the NCEA, enrollment in Catholic schools peaked in the early 1960s at 5.2 million. For the 2019-2020 school year, national enrollment was down to 1.7 million. In some places, like Lebanon, Pennsylvania, that means institutions that have served students for more than a century have made the difficult decision to close for good. In April, Lebanon Catholic School announced it would close its doors for a final time after serving students for 161 years. In a statement, Lebanon Catholic School said, “The school had faced enrollment and financial challenges for years and its continued operation was no longer sustainable by the area parishes... Even after the valiant efforts of the school and parishes during the past year and several years previously, the current and anticipated future debt for the school’s operation would significantly jeopardize the other ministries of the parishes.”Kicanas says if Catholic schools want to survive adaptation and consolidation are necessary.“I think we have to continue to be as innovative as possible in our educational outreach and programs so we really are forming our young people to contribute in the future,” said Kicanas. The National Catholic Educational Association says some Catholic schools have started offering new curriculum, and multi-language courses as a way to increase enrollment. 2540
