SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium welcomed two new residents to its waters this month, a first-ever for the aquarium.Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography bred and hatched two rare Weedy Seadragons for the first time, making the aquarium one of the few in the world to now house the fish.The fragile newborns, native to southern Australia, are under an inch long, but have already started eating tiny shrimp. We have spent over 25 years working with these animals and love that we have made the next steps to conserve this delicate species.”Weedy Seadragons perform an elaborate mating display, spinning snout-to-snout and moving up and down in a water column to transfer eggs from the female onto the male's tail, where they are fertilized and hatched 6 weeks later. The fish's habitat and camouflage make it extremely difficult to locate in the wild. According to the agency, crews will close the westbound SR-54 connector to northbound and southbound I-805 between 11 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday. The former presidential candidate stood alongside protestors at The Westin Hotel on Friday. “Nobody wants to do this. We would all like to work right now,” says employee Arturo Ramirez.Ramirez has been working at The Westin Hotel since February. With the high cost of living in San Diego, Ramirez says its sometimes hard to pay the bills.“My mother and I, we work at the same hotel. We’re struggling to pay ,100 in rent," Ramirez says.Bernie Sanders took the stage to show his support to workers during his visit to San Diego.“We’re saying to Marriott who owns Westin, we’re saying to every corporation in this country who make billions of dollars in profit, pay your workers a living wage," Sanders said to a crowd of protesters.Employees are asking for a raise of at least an hour and a chance to save for their retirement.“It’s a billion dollar company that needs to pay the workers a living wage so they can live in the city of San Diego," says Bridgett Browning, President of Unite Here Union. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction crews have started on about 4.5 miles of bikeways and safety improvements stretching from downtown to Hillcrest.The projects include separated and buffered bikeways on Fourth and Fifth Avenues, safety improvements such as lighting, upgraded landscaping, and improved crosswalks for people with disabilities and pedestrians.In all, the project will cost .2 million and cross from B St. in downtown, through Bankers Hill, and to Washington St. in Hillcrest."This project will make it safer and easier for people to walk and bike along commonly traveled streets to visit local businesses and reach destinations such as Downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, and Hillcrest," said SANDAG Vice Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. "San Diegans are walking and biking more during the pandemic and this project will provide safe and convenient options for people to continue to choose active transportation, even when the health crisis is far behind us."The new bikeways are part of the Uptown Bikeways effort proposed in 2012, meant to connect Uptown, Old Town, Mission Valley, Downtown San Diego, North Park, and Balboa Park. SANDAG says community members worried about the potential loss of parking due to the project worked with officials to find solutions, and ultimately were able to provide a surplus of parking.The agency adds that it has modified construction schedules to best minimize its impact on businesses currently using temporary outdoor setups to operate under coronavirus restrictions along Fourth and Fifth Avenues.Construction on the project is expected to be finished in 2022. During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent lane closures, parking restrictions, construction noise, and dust.
