Officials in North Carolina now say that seven people have been killed in flash floods prompted by Tropical Storm Eta.The Charlotte Observer reports that four people were killed in Alexander County, located about an hour north of Charlotte. There, at a local campground, three bodies were recovered and another 31 people were rescued. As of Thursday afternoon, an adult and a child were still missing from the campsite.Elsewhere in Alexander County, another person died when floodwaters caused a bridge to collapse. It was one of four bridges in the country that were swept away by floods, and one of the collapses was captured live by a local TV news channel.The Observer reports that two other deaths were recorded in Iredell County when floodwaters caused a pickup truck to hydroplane and collided with an oncoming car.The New York Times reports that the seventh fatality occurred in Wake County — near Raleigh — where witnesses say a child who had been playing near a creek drowned in a flash flood.According to The Weather Channel, the Charlotte area received seven inches of rain on Thursday, causing creeks and rivers to overflow quickly. (KGTV) - A woman run over and killed by a construction vehicle at an Oceanside beach was identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.The ME’s Office said 68-year-old Carol Aguirre died in the incident that occurred Sept. 28 on the beach near Oceanside's South Harbor. (KGTV) -- A 63 year old man is grateful to be alive Saturday night after his sailboat capsizes and he was left swimming for his survival.Andrea Aria was on a trip back from Catalina, “I’m alive for the grace of God. Aria sat down with 10 News and talked about the horrific details, “I didn’t even see the wave until I made the turn and it was too late it was up on me”. The wave tipped the boat, he tried holding on, “I let go and went back in the water and I went under the boat and the boat went over me once then twice and the propellers are going”.During that moment he didn’t realize the injuries he was getting, “I didn’t feel, the adrenaline the cold water the salt all I know I couldn’t move my fingers I knew my hands were messed up “. OTAY MESA (CNS) - Border Patrol agents stopped a car in Otay Mesa and arrested five people, including a man who claimed to be a national guardsman from California, for alleged human smuggling, a Customs and Border Protection officer said Saturday.Around 3:45 p.m., Border Patrol agents stopped a car near the intersection of Alta Road and Otay Mesa Boulevard, according to Customs and Border Protection Officer Ralph Desio. The area is about a mile north of the U.S.-Mexico border.Agents interviewed the five people inside the car, all men, and determined two were U.S. citizens and the other three were undocumented Mexican nationals, Desio said.The driver of the car claimed to be a California National Guardsman in the process of separating from the service, according to Desio. California National Guard spokesman Lt. Col Jonathan Shirmo, however, told City News Service that the man was not a national guardsman, and was believed to be a U.S. Army reservist.The Army could not be immediately reached for comment.The five were all arrested, and the two citizens could face charges of human smuggling, Desio said.The three undocumented people were being held as witnesses in the case and will later face deportation proceedings, according to Desio. 1264
