With Georgia playing a key role in this year’s presidential election, Democrats in the state are reminding voters to check the status of their ballot before a 5 p.m. Friday deadline.Voters in Georgia have until then to “cure” their ballot as the state has a rule that allows people who have their ballot rejected for administrative reasons, such as forgetting a signature, to fix their ballot. Ballots not cured by 5 p.m. Friday are thrown out.Georgia is not the only state that allows for ballot curing. According to the National Association of State Legislatures, 18 states have rules that allow voters to correct errors such as signature discrepancies. While in some states, the deadline to fix such discrepancies has passed, in other states, voters have up to three weeks to fix their ballot depending on the state.Other close states that allow ballot curing include Nevada and Arizona. Nevada gives voters seven days to correct a signature discrepancy. Arizona gives voters five days to make a correction.Pennsylvania is a state that does not have a process for ballot curing. According to WPVI-TV, some counties allowed voters to cure their ballot, prompting a lawsuit from Republicans. According to WPVI, nearly 1,600 voters in Bucks County had their ballot rejected, many for not properly placing their ballot inside of the “secrecy envelope," as voters in Pennsylvania are required to place their ballot inside an unmarked envelope, which is placed inside a marked envelope.In most states that permit ballot curing, elections officials are to notify voters of the discrepancy immediately. But with thousands of ballots being counted, there are questions on whether election officials are able to reach all voters.Stacey Abrams, a prominent Georgia Democrat who had an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2018, launched a website “CheckMyBallot.net” which allows voters in key battleground states to check the status of their mail-in or provisional ballot.What voters aren’t able to do through vote curing is change their vote. 2040

Healthcare workers, people in nursing homes, first responders and those with high-risk health conditions will likely be the first people eligible to receive the vaccine. According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Insitute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases, the rest of the general population won't be able to receive the vaccine until later in 2021.Pfizer and Moderna have both announced that their vaccines are on track for potential emergency authorization from the Food and Drug Administration. But there are several other candidates that could also get approval soon — and could potentially overtake the market.Both Pfizer's and Moderna's vaccine candidates require two shots, which need to be taken 28 days apart. But health experts believe that if a single-dose vaccine gets approval, it could quickly become the standard for worldwide vaccination."So, if you can get a vaccine out there that actually requires only one dose, it could quickly overtake the market," said Dr. Marcus Schabacker the President & CEO, of Emergency Care Research Institute.Health experts are also encouraged that there are several vaccine candidates in the final stages of testing — they believe that more potential vaccines reduce safety risks."We have a lot of people in the world. We need to vaccinate in different countries under different criteria, and you always run the risk that there's something in the Pfizer vaccine that someone's allergic to that isn't in the Madonna vaccine," said Dr. Jill Roberts, an associated professor as USF Health.One question that hasn't yet been answered is how the vaccines will stand up to the newly infected."So if you're turning positive today, we know you are exposed to somebody that had COVID, and we vaccinate you today — will that actually prevent you from developing severe disease?" While the national debate continues on whether school teachers should be allowed to posses firearms in classrooms, one Pennsylvania school district is moving forward with arming its teachers... with baseball bats. The Millcreek School District, which is located near Erie, announced it is arming up to 500 teachers with baseball bats in case of an active shooter, WICU-TV reported. The district said it spent ,800 on the 16-inch wooden bats. The bats are not quite the same size used in baseball games. Typical baseball bats are at least 30 inches long. The bats will be locked up, and out of the reach of students. WICU reported that the bats were handed to teachers after a day of training, which included lessons on what to do during an active shooting. "We passed them out, with the goal being we wanted every room to have one of these,” Millcreek School District Superintendent William Hall told WICU. “Unfortunately, we're in a day and age where one might need to use them to protect ourselves and our kids."Hall conceded that the bats are largely symbolic, but it gives teachers an option to fight back with. Millcreek Education Association president Jon Cacchione told WICU that he supports teachers having access to bats. "This is a tool to have in the event we have nothing else,” Cacchione told WICU. "Part of the formula now, is to fight back, and so I think the bats that were provided for the staff were symbolic of that.”Hall said that the district is considering other safety improvements to schools, including arming teachers with firearms. The district has been surveying parents on arming teachers with guns, but it is not actively planning on arming teachers.  1760

But with COVID-19 still a concern, families all over the United States are wondering if it's safe to go trick-or-treating this year.WFTS took those concerns to medical experts with Baycare Health, who say with some added safety precautions, your family can still take part in trick-or-treating, handing out candy and other Halloween festivities.If you plan to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home, instead of handing out candy at your door, consider arranging individual treat bags on a table in your driveway or near the front door for a contact-less hand-off."Instead of having it all in a bucket, where everyone is putting their hands in, lay out a row so that when they come up, they can just grab one and go," said Michelle Sterling, the children's wellness and safety specialist with St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. "Then, you can refill that row after the little trick-or-treaters leave your house."When it comes to going home-to-home for trick-or-treating, Sterling said be sure to wear a mask when around people who are not part of your household.Also, doctors say Halloween costume masks are not a substitute for a cloth mask unless it is made of two or more layers of fabric and fits snugly around your mouth and nose.Additionally, medical experts say wearing a costume mask over a protective cloth mask can make it difficult to breathe. Instead, they say to consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.Doctors also recommend keeping a physical distance of at least six feet from people who are not in your immediate household, using hand sanitizer often, and waiting to eat candy until you are at home and can wash your hands with soap and water.Keep in mind though, updated safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discourages families from taking part in traditional trick-or-treating.Sterling is also offering the following tricks for keeping Halloween a treat for your family during the pandemic:Go all out with the Halloween decorations. Keep it budget-friendly by having your kids help create decorations to hang from windows, trees, mailbox, etc. You could even turn one of your bedrooms into a kid-friendly haunted house.Decorate doors inside your house and let your little ones go trick-or-treating indoors. Get the whole family involved with mom or dad behind one door, an older sibling behind another and grandparents behind yet another door.Set up a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt in and around your house. Provide clues and leave treats along the route.Turn up your spooky Halloween music and have a dance party with your children. Yellin shared some of Schumer's candidate recommendations for voters and directed followers to read to the bottom of a list where Schumer wrote, "I'm pregnant."Schumer, 37, teased the reveal in a separate Instagram post, sharing a photo of herself and her husband made to look like a pregnant Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.The couple married in an intimate outdoor ceremony in Malibu, California last February.
