CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - State investigators have cited an in-home daycare in Bonita for feeding melatonin to children.10News learned a criminal investigation is underway into Brenda Saucedo Family Child Care. The daycare has had a license since 2007, according to the California Department of Social Services.6-year-old Julius had been at his new daycare for two weeks when he was put down for his first nap time in early August. Julius says he was handed a red drink with white flakes in it."I thought it was Gatorade but it didn't taste like Gatorade," said Julius.Julius drank it all."They told me to lie down, and I fell right asleep," said Julius. When he awoke, he still felt sleepy. After he told his family, his mother Vanessa Cherry says a complaint was filed with the state's Child Care Licensing Program, sparking a surprise inspection. Weeks later, she received their report."I felt angry. I felt like I let my son down. You feel betrayed," said Cherry. Based on interviews and documentation like text messages, state investigators cited the daycare for "providing Melatonin to the daycare children to alter their behavior and/or help them sleep." A spokesperson with the California Department of Social Services says "the licensee told CSDD staff that she administered melatonin to school-age children and melatonin was found on the premises.""How dare you give my kid something without telling me without my acknowledgement ... you don't have the right," said Cherry.Cherry filed a report with deputies, who started an investigation.Melatonin is a natural supplement used as a sleep aid. Possible side effects include dizziness and nausea. There have been a handful of recent criminal cases across the country involving daycare providers and melatonin. Three daycare providers in the Chicago area were charged with giving children melatonin gummy bears before nap time. In Oregon, a woman sentenced to 21 years for feeding melatonin to kids while she went to a tanning salon and the gym. Some of those kids now complain of problems with their sleep cycles. When 10News knocked on the door of the daycare, a woman identifying herself as the owner told us the only child she fed melatonin to is her own child because he has autism. As for Julius, she told 10News she didn't put anything in his drink. When pressed on the specifics of the licensing division report, she said, "I don't want to comment on that any more.""They should be shut down. Your child should be safe in a place you entrust with their safety. This is a parent's worst fear. Someone is giving something to your child without you knowing," said Cherry.Anyone with information on the case is asked the call the San Diego Sheriff's Department Imperial Beach station at 619-498-2400.Cherry says she is planning on filing a lawsuit against the daycare provider. The California Department of Social Services issued the following statements in response to our questions: "The licensee told CDSS staff that she administered melatonin to school-age children, and melatonin was found on the premises. The licensee was informed that this was a violation of state licensing regulations and must cease. She agreed to end the practice, and stated that she understands the danger of administering melatonin and that she will not do so again ... The licensee must post a copy of the complaint investigation report on site, provide a copy to the parents/guardians of children in care at the facility, and provide a copy to parents/guardians of all newly enrolled children in the next 12 months. She also agreed to review educational materials on children’s personal rights in child care, as set forth in state regulations, and provide a summary of the material to the analyst assigned to the case. If this corrective action is not completed, the facility may be subject to civil penalties. In addition, because of the seriousness of the incident, the licensee will be required to attend a follow-up meeting with CDSS staff to discuss the incident and any other concerns about the facility’s compliance with regulations. Such meetings may lead to additional licensing action. The inquiry conducted by CDSS found no evidence of injuries or complications to the children.CDSS takes the allegations in this case seriously. The Department cannot confirm or deny the existence of an investigation. In general, when a facility has experienced a serious 'Type A' violation – an incident creating an immediate risk to the health, safety or personal rights of those in care – it may be subjected to additional scrutiny, including more frequent, unannounced inspections."See how to check the state's report on your child's daycare here. 4700

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A close family friend is speaking out after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed at a Chula Vista birthday party while defending his friend. Devin Griffiths was stabbed at a birthday party on the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista on January 31. Reid Schneider, a friend of the family, says the party was first advertised on the social media platform Snapchat. Schneider says there was a doorman at the party as well as security guards. Witnesses say an argument between Devin’s friend and another teenager escalated into a fight outside. Devin, who was not involved in the original fight, intervened to help his friend when he was stabbed. "They started hurting Devin’s friend. Devin jumped in and he was beat down pretty bad and stabbed a few times," Schneider said. "He had some severe brain damage. I guess he was considered dead on scene and they kind of brought him back."RELATED: 15-year-old stabbed, killed protecting friend at Chula Vista birthday partyDevin underwent at least five surgeries within the first 12 hours, according to Schneider. He died on February 16 after being taken off life support. "There was a lot of times where we thought there was hope and and unfortunately there was too much damage," Schneider added. Police told 10News Tuesday that the teen “passed away with his family at his side.”A candlelight vigil was held for the teen Wednesday night on the Helix High campus, which is where Devin went to school. A GoFundMe has also been set up to help the family. "He was a kid that has gone through a lot more obstacles than a lot of other kids and adults as a 15-year-old. And he was striving. He was striving and he was going to make something of his life," Schneider said. RELATED: Friends of slain Helix High School student working to build permanent memorial for himPolice say the suspect group is believed to consist of eight to 15 men and women between the ages of 17 and 20. All the suspects are still at-large. Investigators believe witnesses may have used their cell phones to record the stabbing and are asking anyone with information or video to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call Chula Vista Police at 619-691-5178 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. 2269

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista police are now investigating multiple fires that broke out in over the span of a few days in the early hours of the morning.Captain Linda D’Orsi, Public Information Officer for the Chula Vista Fire Department, said they started early in the morning Sept. 17 and most have been fences and vegetation that burned. That Thursday morning, crews responded to multiple fires that started in the span of about half an hour, starting on Lake Crest Dr. & Wueste Rd, moving to 1120 Eastlake Parkway, then Telegraph Canyon Rd and Buena Vista Way and finally E. J St and Paseo Ladera.Just about two days later, crews then responded to a fire at the playground at Veteran’s Park. Karina Lodin lives across the street. She said she woke up to see the flames, then she called 911 and her husband took a video of the blaze.“For a second there, with everything that’s going on in California with all the wildfires, and you see this big fire outside your house, you start panicking like is my house going to catch up on fire,” said Lodin. She was disheartened to see the play structure flattened because it was a spot her son loved to play.Just one day after that, another fire nearby on Martin Place, also in the early hours of the morning.“As of this latest one, we have now requested our PD liaison because there seems to be a trend and we want to get to the bottom of this,” said Captain D’Orsi.Captain D’Orsi said they have not found anything left behind at each scene and have not found any witnesses with information on people in the area.“No obvious evidence left at the scene, no matches no flares,” she said. She added that anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista Police Department non emergency line at 619-691-5151.“We just want the community to be aware and be willing to provide information if they have any,” said Captain D’Orsi. 1894

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) – A Chula Vista man says he could have been seriously hurt by a razor blade attached to the handlebar of a shopping cart.Jason Rodriguez says he was with his wife and young daughter, shopping at the Walmart on Eastlake Parkway Wednesday morning.“Normally we put her in the shopping cart, but I’m glad we didn’t this time,” Rodriguez said.Rodriguez discovered the blade when he went to wipe down the cart handle.  It was attached by magnets to the bottom of the handlebar.“I could have been cut. I could have caught a disease of some sort,” Rodriguez said. “There are crazy people out there who do dumb things for who knows what reason.”Rodriguez says he alerted store management to the incident. He added that he doesn’t blame Walmart because whoever hid the blade could have just as easily put it on other store’s carts. However, he hopes that stores and people will be more vigilant going forward.Walmart gave 10News the following statement: 979

CHICAGO, Ill. -- With the U.S. Postal Service stretched thin and millions voting by mail, some voters have taken extreme measures to ensure their vote counts. In some cases, they’ve traveled hundreds of miles to cast a ballot.Following the postmaster general’s controversial decision this summer to decommission nearly 700 mail-sorting machines across the country, Sarah Alana was worried about voting by mail.“We all have a choice and what's going on right now with the Postal Service is another matter entirely. Clearly, it's not working,” she said.In Georgia, where she has lived and voted since 2013, nearly a dozen mail-sorting machines were removed. Still, she applied for an absentee ballot.“It was sent out the same day,” said Alana. “Three weeks later, no absentee ballot. And I was getting just so mad.”Even more of a problem, she’s currently staying in Durango, Colorado, dealing with respiratory issues.“I'm here to see if the dry air is a little bit better for my breathing problems,” she said.In Georgia, more than 1.1 million absentee by mail ballots have been returned, trouncing the nearly 155,000 cast in 2016. But, another half million mail-in ballots have yet to be returned.Sarah Alana decided not to take any chances. Despite being high-risk for complications from COVID-19, she bought a 5 plane ticket and made the 1,600-mile journey from Durango to Atlanta to vote in person.“I went through three airports. I took two flights. I was in three Lyft rides, which actually, that was scary for me too.”Others have made similar trips, like a woman studying in Chicago who traveled to her home state of Texas to cast her ballot. The children of 94-year-old Mildred Madison children drove her 300 miles to Detroit to vote in person when her absentee ballot didn’t arrive at her temporary address.“Vote. But know who you are voting for and why,” said Madison.Alana says there’s too much at stake this election not to ensure your voice is heard.“I didn't want to be a victim,” she said. “There is no American citizen that needs to be a victim this year. Let's just do what it takes and get out there and vote.” 2134
