BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday reaffirmed its resolve to keep its economy on track amid the global financial turmoil. In a meeting with visiting U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel, Vice Premier Wang Qishan said the financial crisis, triggered by the U.S. credit crunch, had exerted a grave impact on the global financial market. Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan(R) shakes hands with visiting U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 14, 2008 "As a responsible country, China has always valued the communication and cooperation with other nations to ensure world financial and economic stability." Wang said China would make great efforts to keep its economy on the right track, which would be the country's greatest contribution to the world. China had implemented and would continue measures to ensure the stability of finance, economy and the capital market, he said, referring to a package of new policies to spur economic growth. The central bank cut interest rates on Sept. 15 for the first time in six years. The People's Bank of China, the central bank, announced the deposit and lending rates would be lowered by 0.27 percentage points and the reserve-requirement ratio would be reduced 0.5 percentage points starting Oct. 15. "With tools at our disposal, we are confident and capable of prevailing over the overall difficulties and challenges," Wang told Hagel. He added the overall bilateral relations of the two countries had moved forward and become increasingly interdependent since forging diplomatic ties in 1979. To promote China-U.S. ties was in the fundamental interests of the two nations, he said. Wang proposed the two deepen a strategic trust and take a candid and pragmatic approach in addressing differences. They should work more closely on economy, trade, investment, energy, environment and high-tech. He also urged the United States to observe the three joint communiques, refrain from anything harmful to bilateral ties and the stability of the Taiwan Straits, so as to ensure the sound and steady progress of bilateral constructive cooperation. As all nations were becoming more connected, Hagel, a Republican senator from Nebraska, said the stronger cooperation between the United States and China would help ensure world financial and economic stability.

China will put emphasis on both energy exploitation and conservation with priority given to economizing on energy consumption, Xi said at the ongoing International Energy Conference held in the western Saudi port city of Jeddah. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping addresses the the international energy meeting held in Jeddah, Aaudi Arabia on SundayChina has drafted a plan to reduce the energy consumption in per unit gross domestic product by about 20 percent by 2010 from the 2005 level, Xi said. China will try to meet the demands for economic growth and the improvement of people's life by increasing domestic energy supply, Xi said. China still has great potential for domestic energy supply, as the country has abundant reserves in coal, the major source for its energy. Its rich hydroelectric resources, plus other new energies such as nuclear energy, wind energy, are yet to be fully exploited, he added. China will pursue diversified development of energy supplies, Xi said. Various energy forms such as coal, oil and gas, hydroelectricity, wind electricity and solar energy will supplement each other to secure a stable energy supply, he said. Technological progress and innovation in the energy field will be encouraged in China, said the vice president. BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, the Cabinet, has started the first-class national food safety emergency response to deal with the tainted Sanlu milk powder incident that has caused kidney stones in at least 432 babies. The State Council has set up a national leading group comprising officials from the Health Ministry, the quality watchdog and local governments for the incident. A preliminary investigation has confirmed the Sanlu baby milk powder contaminated by melamine was the cause of kidney stones in infants, said an official statement released here Saturday evening. The melamine substance found in some of the Sanlu products was deliberately added to increase the protein percentage in raw milk or milk powder, it said. The statement said the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council attached high importance to the issue, urging all-out efforts in treating the affected babies. The patients will be given free medical treatment and the cost will be shouldered by the government. Meanwhile, the State Council urged a thorough overhaul of the milk powder market, directing the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) to join other departments to check all the brands of baby formulas circulating in the market, and immediately pull those disqualified products off shelves. The reason why the Sanlu baby formula was contaminated must be found out as soon as possible, the State Council said, directing the local government and relevant departments to overhaul all the links including the milk powder production, cow raising, raw milk collection and dairy processing. Based on the findings, the criminals and all those responsible would be severely punished, it said. Relevant local government and departments should draw lessons from the incident and improve the food safety and quality supervision mechanism to ensure the food safety of the public, it added. The State Council has directed the provincial government of Hebei, where the Sanlu group is based, to halt production of the group. An investigation team set up by the health ministry and other departments is also in the province to probe into the cause, and the quality watchdog AQSIQ is conducting an all-round overhaul of baby milk powder producers across the country
