WASHINGTON, D.C. – Could foreign parts in voting machines be putting the U.S. election at risk for hacking? It’s a question that lawmakers have been exploring as they seek answers from top bosses at three major voting manufacturers. Tom Burt, the President and CEO OF Election Systems & Software, appeared confident as he testified before the House Administration Committee last week. “We’ve seen no evidence that our voting systems have been tampered with in any way,” said Burt. The companies that make vote tabulation systems say they welcome federal oversight of election infrastructure and need help securing their supply chains, especially for voting machine parts made in foreign countries. “Several of those components, to our knowledge, there is no option for manufacturing those in the United States,” explained Dominion Voting Systems CEO John Poulos. Cyber and national security experts say antiquated and paperless voting machines pose the most significant risk to the U.S.’s election infrastructure. Matt Blaze, a Professor of Law & Computer Science at Georgetown University, testified before the committee that even the scanners that record paper ballot selections can be tampered with. “It’s simply beyond the state of the art to build software systems that can reliably withstand targeted attack by a determined adversary,” said Blaze. In the wake of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congress is pumping nearly a billion dollars into making voting machines safer.“We're definitely in a much better position today than we were at the end of 2016,” said Liz Howard, an attorney with the nonprofit, nonpartisan Brenan Center for Justice in Washington. She also testified at last week’s hearing. “So, no machine is 100 percent secure. Election officials’ goal is to make the most resilient election system that they possibly can,” said Howard. Some are calling for regular election audits, more resources for state voting officials and the phasing out of all paperless voting machines. The Brennan Center estimates only about half of the states that used paperless voting machines in 2016 will continue to use them in 2020. Those eight states include Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas. Some assert that requiring a paper ballot is the only way to have a reliable back-up of each vote. “We absolutely need to have a paper record of every vote cast. Right. And that is a foundational election security measure,” said HowardWith top U.S. intelligence officials warning that foreign powers like Russia and Iran are intent on undermining American elections, experts say there is at least widespread agreement that election security is national security. 2745

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Within the World Wide Web, lies a whole world of information. “We worried about hackers,” said University of Maryland professor Jennifer Golbeck, “but we didn't worry about essentially ‘surveillance capitalism’ – companies that make money by collecting data about us and selling it to other people.” Those companies are known as “data brokers.” They operate with little oversight, but collect thousands of pieces of data about you every day. What could it include? If you have a store loyalty card – they know what you buy. If you have an app – they can track your location and what websites you visit. Credit reports, real estate transactions, job applications: all can be compiled by data brokers to paint a picture of who you are. They don’t have to tell you about it and it’s all perfectly legal. Prof. Golbeck specializes in data privacy at University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies and has looked at the way data brokers operate. “For data brokers, in particular, people have tried [to find out what they know] and most of the time they won't share it because that's their product. The thing that has a value is all that data. So, they don't want to give it away,” she said. “It's their data. It's about you. And that, I think, is really the fundamental problem with how we think about data in the U.S. It is my data. It's information about me. But I don't have a right to it. I don't own it here.” That is not the case in Europe, where the European Union enacted the “General Data Protection and Regulation” law in 2018. It regulates the processing of personal information and data and allows consumers to request a copy of the data collected about them – similar to the way people in the U.S. can get a copy of their credit report. Privacy experts say that’s what makes the need for federal oversight of data brokers so critical. “Ultimately, this is not a ‘David versus Goliath’ situation. It is not something that consumers can solve on their own,” said Alan Butler, senior counsel for the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) in Washington, D.C. This month, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) introduced the “Data Protection Act of 2020.” Among other things, it would create a federal “Data Protection Agency” that would protect consumers and monitor where their data goes and how it’s used. “I think what we've seen over the past 10 years is an increase really an epidemic of data breach in this country. And that's really the result of the amassing of so much personal information in given places,” Butler said. “Really, we need laws that limit and control the collection of personal information rather than our current situation.” California recently enacted a stronger data privacy law within that state: the California Consumer Privacy Act, which allows people to learn what data is being collected about them and allows them to opt out of having their data sold. Experts believe that law could end up having a cascading effect and spread to other states, but a federal law would be the only way to guarantee those protections to all Americans. In the meantime, experts say in order to protect yourself, install a tracker blocker on your phone and browsers and set all your online settings to private. 3274

There is growing concern as more drugstores are pulling over-the-counter heartburn medications like Zantac. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is looking into the amount of a potential cancer-causing ingredient in the drugs. Zantac is just one of the meds discovered to have NDMA in it. A doctor said this is a serious situation but likely a precautionary move. “It’s a real issue,” said gastroenterologist Dr. Niket Sonpal. “Now the question is, and the research isn’t really definitive, on how much exposure in the short term or in the long term actually leads to ... we simply just know right now that NDMA is associated with cancer but the quantification isn’t clear.” NDMA also got heart and blood pressure meds pulled from shelves. If you deal with heartburn, doctors say Tums, Maalox or even a glass of milk could help. Make sure you call your doctor if you're having issues, like if the heartburn is waking you up at night. There are changes you can make to help. “The medicines for heartburn control your symptoms,” Sonpal said. “But the truest way to get rid of heartburn is lifestyle change. The No. 1 cause of heartburn in the United States is obesity.”Other things that can help avoid heartburn: Don't eat heavy meals right before bedSleep with your head and shoulders raisedRecognize which foods are causing issues and stay away 1358
