SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A transit security officer stabbed a man who tried to grab his service pistol at the Old Town Transit Center Friday, San Diego Police said. The encounter was reported at 1 p.m. at the station at 4009 Taylor St. Police said the armed officer was attacked by a man who “violently pulled” on the gun in the holster in an attempt to remove it. The officer kept his weapon and defended himself with his duty knife, stabbing the man in the torso, according to police. Despite his injury, the unidentified man ran away. He was later found under a nearby bridge and taken into custody, police said. The security officer had minor injuries to his face from being punched. 689

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ahead of the Halloween weekend, San Diego State University is issuing a stay-at-home advisory for all students.The college said following the CDC's discouragement from participating in Halloween or social events where physical distancing cannot be done, as well as San Diego County's recommendation to avoid similar gatherings, a temporary advisory for students will go into effect from Friday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 a.m.Under the advisory, students are encouraged to stay home unless for an essential need.The university says it will continue to enforce the campus' COVID-19 policies against large gatherings off-campus, including recent reports of social events in the College Area that have drawn dozens of students together without physical distancing or mask wearing. Since Aug. 24, nearly 900 notices of alleged violations of the campus' COVID-19 policy have been issued."It takes only one person, even one who is asymptomatic, to create a public health risk. As members of this community, and with the care of others in mind, we again ask you to avoid gatherings of any type that do not comply with public health guidelines," the school said in a release.Those who are found violating SDSU's COVID-19 policies could face sanctions, suspension, or expulsion.SDSU is encouraging students to take part in virtual Halloween events, including:Saturday, Oct. 24, Aztec Nights: Fall Festival virtual event will include games, trivia, and an interactive demonstration by pumpkin carver Tom Nardone from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.Thursday, Oct. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 31, the SDSU Alcohol and Other Drugs Task Force will be facilitating “Zoom into Halloween.” Members of SDSU’s student clubs and organizations who commit to hosting an event on one of those days between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight will receive four gift cards, which they can then use as a drawing during their hosted events. The company behind the project plans to open the multi-concept development in phases, with the retail space scheduled to open first in the beginning of March. The residential area is set to open in the summer of 2019 with offices on the property following in 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After a nationwide vote, San Diego Zoo's newest river hippo calf has been named.The zoo's 20-day-old hippo will be named Amahle, meaning "beautiful one" in Zulu. The name was revealed Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America." “The fact that so many people were part of this process has been amazing. Amahle was a name suggested multiple times and it couldn’t be a better fit. The father, Otis, has been kept separate from the two since Funani is very protective of the calf.“My hope is that those who participated in this naming event will feel a connection with Amahle and are inspired to learn more about river hippos and ways they can help hippos in their native range in Africa," Chapman said.The hippopotamus is currently listed as "vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Five months later, the entrepreneurs say they are thriving, thanks to their expansion into a chicken coop.Starting a business takes guts. Starting a business during a global pandemic is extremely risky."We built our business around the idea of lockdown and quarantine," IvyMay & Co. co-owner Cody Warden said.RELATED: San Diego couple launches new business during COVID-19 pandemicWarden and girlfriend, Tammy Nguyen, thought if people cannot be outside, they would bring the outdoors to them. That inspired the creation of IvyMay & Co., an online houseplant curating and delivery company.In July, Warden was newly jobless, and Nguyen was working her corporate PR job when they started the company. Since then, Nguyen quit her job, and their business blossomed. They went from having twenty deliveries to now more than 120 in a week. They hired more staff and outgrew their space almost immediately."We needed to figure out a spatial solution so that we can continue to grow," Nguyen said.Their solution was Warden's father's backyard in Encinitas, specifically their chicken coop. Warden and his father renovated the 300 square foot space to have a greenhouse and an office. It is not your typical warehouse, but they say it is perfect."It's like working with what you have and being able to pivot and do whatever it takes to take your business to the next step," Nguyen said.They say it is this kind of ingenuity, a loving family, and loyal customers that keep them focused. Whether they expand to delivery to other counties or build a storefront, only time will tell. But pandemic or not, they plan to stick around."We may not know where we're going to be in six months, but I can guarantee you that we will be around for you to talk to us in six months.
