NEW YORK CITY — In what New York City's mayor is calling a "Christmas miracle," an NYPD officer is conscious and communicating after he was shot in the back in Brooklyn while responding to a 911 call for a domestic dispute, police said.The incident occurred in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn on Thursday night.Police said the alleged shooter has been arrested and the gun was recovered. A bulletproof vest protected the 27-year-old officer, who was rushed to a local hospital after being shot near Prospect Place and Ralph Avenue. It went into the vest, but didn't penetrate the officer's skin, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said.The shooter allegedly threatened his girlfriend, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said.The girlfriend's mother repeatedly called 911, begging for police to come, Shea said. She said the boyfriend had threatened to shoot the home up. As officers on the scene interviewed the daughter, her boyfriend arrived.He shot an officer and then ran, Shea said. Other officers pursued and arrested him a few blocks away. Body camera video shows officers repeatedly tell the shooter to drop his gun. He put it down on the sidewalk and was taken into custody."Because the NYPD was there, that woman is alive right now," de Blasio said. "Because our officer put himself in harm's way, an innocent woman is alive."The officer’s precise condition wasn’t immediately clear, but police officials said the officer was awake and responsive and has since been released from the hospital.De Blasio and Shea spoke to the officer's parents."They felt that this was a Christmas miracle that their son was alive and well," de Blasio said.The NYPD asked people to avoid the area. People were advised to expect a police presence in the area."It's Christmas Eve. Netflix has apologized for images it used to promote an upcoming film on their streaming service after getting backlash online, and a petition to remove the film got almost 190,000 signatures.The movie, called “Cuties” in the U.S., follows an 11-year-old girl who joins a dance group. The film, directed by Ma?mouna Doucouré and originally called “Mignonnes”, won a directing award at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.The petition on Change.org points out the marketing imagery and language Netflix used to promote the film, and calls it “disgusting” because it “sexualizes an eleven year old for the viewing pleasure of pedophiles.”The main image Netflix originally used shows the four lead actresses, all girls, wearing black and turquoise dance outfits revealing their stomachs and most of their legs, while posed mid-dance.The film is recommended for 16+, according to Netflix.https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1296486375211053057“We're deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties. NEWARK, N.J. - Before the holiday travel season picks up, United Airlines said they will be offering free coronavirus tests to passengers on select flights between New Jersey and the United Kingdom, beginning Nov. 16.According to a press release, the airline launched the 4-week pilot program that will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 11.United is only rapidly testing passengers flying between Newark Liberty International Airport to London Heathrow, free of charge.United said appointments are required, and passengers will have to arrive three hours before their flight to get results back in time."We believe the ability to provide fast, same-day COVID-19 testing will play a vital role in safely reopening travel around the world and navigating quarantines and travel restrictions, particularly to key international destinations like London," said Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer for United in the news release. "Through this pilot program, we'll guarantee that everyone* onboard has tested negative for COVID-19, adding another element to our layered approach to safety. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law Thursday a bill that prohibits the sale of the Confederate flag and other "symbols of hate" at the New York State Fair, and bans the display of those items in public buildings.The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, D-Bronx, Westchester, and "prohibits the state of New York from selling or displaying symbols of hate or any similar image, or tangible personal property, inscribed with such an image unless the image appears in a book, digital medium, museum or serves an educational or historical purpose."According to the bill, a "symbol of hate" is defined as "symbols of white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideology or the Battle Flag of the Confederacy."The bill also empowers the Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Markets to prohibit the sale of "symbols of hate" at any other fairs in New York that receive federal, local or state funding."This bill would limit the display of the Confederate flag, as well as other symbols of hate, on or within the grounds of public property, including fairgrounds.
