SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  Pacific Trails Middle School student Kevin Luo has been crowned the winner of the 2018 countywide spelling bee.The 8th grader won the bee at 12:30 p.m. after a grueling three and a half hours of spelling. This year's winning word was gradine, which is "a low step or ledge, especially one at the back of an altar."Last year's winner was also from Pacific Trails Middle School. Yash Hande advanced to the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether or not the Padres head to the World Series, Petco Park may still see playoff baseball this season.Under a plan by the MLB, a neutral-site playoff format with teams living in a "bubble" may be finalized next week, though it is awaiting approval by the Players Association, according to ESPN.The plan states that playoffs would start with the top four seeds in the AL and NL hosting all the games in a best-of-three wild-card series: the AL games between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 and the NL games between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.The highest AL seed would be the home team for the division series at Petco Park in San Diego, while the other series heads to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The AL championship series would then be played at Petco Park.On the NL side, the top seed into the division series would play at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and the next-highest seed would play at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The NL championship series would be hosted in Arlington.The MLB's reported plan would begin the World Series on Oct. 20 at Arlington and end no later than Oct. 28.ESPN reports that the Players Association is considering concerns from players who have lived outside of the bubble format, similar to how the NBA has operated this season, with the ability to be around family and friends. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego County breweries were among the fastest growing craft breweries in the country in 2017, according to the Brewers Association.Novo Brazil Brewing Co. in Chula Vista and Bay City Brewing Co. in San Diego both made the list. The list includes breweries across 25 states. Novo was ranked as the 8th and Bay City 28th fastest-growing small breweries.California lays claim to the speediest growth with several breweries listed, according to the association.Median growth for the top 50 fastest-growing breweries between 2016 and 2017 was 216 percent, according to the Brewers Association. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With summer break approaching, students and parents at Cathedral Catholic High School are pushing to be heard by the school's administration. This comes a week after school leaders decided the girls will not be allowed to wear skirts next year. Students, along with their parents, have been protesting since Monday. Parents tell 10News the push is much more than just the students being allowed to wear skirts. "We just want an opportunity to be heard," says parent Michelle Adams. "The girls would like to wear skirts. It's been a tradition here at the school for forever."It's been one week since the students and parents found out about the changes to next year's dress code. The girls will only be allowed to wear pants, capri pants, and Bermuda shorts. Parents say they wish the school would have included them before making the decision. "It's not so much about the skirts but about the process and the fact that this mandate was just dropped down on high without really consulting," says parent Matthew Boyd. "Our principals are both men," says 10th grade student Samantha Conant. "They don't understand. It's so unfair how they handled the whole thing."Since the memo went out last Friday, parents say the administration has been inaccessible. 10News reached out to the Catholic Diocese about the changes in the dress code for next year. We are still waiting on a response. Summer break is just three days away. Parents say they are still working to meet with the Catholic Diocese and the school's administration on the issue. 1562
