BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The value of yuan, China's currency Renminbi, hit new high against U.S. dollar Wednesday as the central parity rate of the yuan was set at 6.6693 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Wednesday's central parity rate beat the previous record of 6.6732 on Oct. 11.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Wednesday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by about 2.32 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 9.294 Wednesday, lower from 9.2574 on Oct. 12, the previous trading day.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 8.1477 Wednesday, compared with 8.124 on Tuesday.

GUANGZHOU, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's first inter-city subway, linking two southern China cities hosting the 2010 Asian Games, started operations Wednesday.The 21-kilometer Guangfo Line connects Guangzhou City with Foshan City, both in the manufacturing hub of the Pearl River Delta region in Guangdong Province.Riders on the subway will find that the travel time between the two cities has been reduced from 90 minutes to 30 minutes, said sources with the subway company Guangzhou Metro.The line has 14 stations and a ride from end to end costs only six yuan (less than one U.S. dollar).Local authorities have been pushing for the increased integration of cities in the Pearl River Delta and consider the operation of the Guangfo Line a big step in that direction.The subway was purposely opened one week prior to the start of the 2010 Asian Games. BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday handed out the first group of Internet map service licenses to 31 Chinese and joint-venture operators, after authorities tightened market access amid worries that booming Internet map services might undermine state security.The 31 operators, including a national-level map publisher, several map service providers affiliated with major Chinese portals such as Baidu.com and Sina.com, and nearly a dozen state-owned local research institute or mapping bureaus, obtained a class-A license from the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.Operators who obtain a class-A license will be allowed to conduct services including map searching and locations, marking geographic information, downloading and copying of maps, and map transmissions and quotations. Class-B licenses will restrict companies to offer services of map searching and locations, as well as geographic information marking.All Internet map services providers will have to apply for a license, while those operating without the license will be prosecuted in China in accordance with the law, said an official from the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, who required anonymity.The official did not elaborate on the deadline for license applications.Foreign-owned or foreign-invested Internet firms can apply for the license in the capacity of joint ventures or through cooperation with Chinese businesses, according to the official.Nokia Alliance Internet Services Company Limited, a joint venture between Nokia and New Alliance, which is part of the Shanghai Alliance Investment Limited, is among the businesses that have obtained a class-A license.
