BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. The Geely-Volvo deal has won approval from the Chinese government."With this the decks are now clear for Geely to complete its acquisition of Volvo and start manufacturing the brand in China," said Wang Zhile, director of the research center on transnational corporations under the Ministry of Commerce.Yuan Xiaolin, Geely's spokesman for the Volvo deal was unavailable on Thursday for comment. However, unnamed sources from Geely told China Daily that the Zhejiang-based automaker will hold a formal function on Monday to complete the deal.Geely's shares surged nearly 11.32 percent and closed at HK.95 per share in Hong Kong on Thursday.Privately owned Geely paid .8 billion to acquire the Volvo car brand from Ford on March 28 this year. It was the biggest overseas deal made by Chinese automakers in recent times.Geely Chairman Li Shufu had at that time indicated that the company would invest 0 million as operating capital in Volvo apart from the US.8 billion purchase price.Geely said on July 15 that it had appointed Li as the chairman of the board at Volvo Car Corp. At the same time it appointed the former president and CEO of Volvo Hans-Olov Olsson as the vice-chairman.More appointments to the board and top management, including the chief executive and chief financial officer, may be made next week, said sources.Analysts said the Volvo buy will help Geely gain a competitive edge in China and also a major toehold in Europe.Pursuant to completion of the deal, Geely is likely to start making Volvo cars locally.Though it has not announced a location yet, indications are that it may consider Jiading in Shanghai, Chengdu in Sichuan, Beijing or Tianjin as possible production sites.During the firsts six months of the year, Volvo sold 15,497 cars in China, up 88 percent over last year.That compares to the Swedish luxury brand's 5.2 percent and 9 percent year-on-year decline in major markets like the United States and Germany.Geely plans to increase Volvo's annual sales in China to 150,000 units by 2015, said sources.

BEIJING, Aug 5(Xinhunet) -- China's machinery industry has rebounded during the first half of this year, but the momentum is likely to slow as the country's economy cools.The machinery industry has grown by 37 percent during the first six months of 2010, with a total output value of 6.59 trillion yuan, according to the China Machinery Industry Federation, a quasi-governmental institution that oversees growth of China's machinery sector.The machinery industry, which has benefited from the government's 4 trillion yuan investment spending spree, enjoyed expansion in large-scale construction projects over the last year. The construction machinery sector reported 54 percent growth during the first half of this year, according to the federation.The strong growth of the industry is based on preliminary statements by several listed machinery companies submitted to the stock exchange.Shanghai-listed Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Development Co, which is also planning to launch a listing in Hong Kong, predicted its profit would grow by 50 percent to 100 percent over the first half this year.Sany Heavy Industry Co is also expected to record 85 percent growth this year, according to Ping An Securities. The maker has already reported a growth rate of 170 percent in profit during the first quarter of this year.However, not all machinery industry sectors are reporting the same momentum as domestic demand has decreased this year. New orders in power generation equipment, transmission and substation equipment as well as heavy machinery, have rolled back this year."It is unlikely to see significant growth in the output of power equipment this year and it will probably stand around 117 million kW since the base figure is already huge," according to Cai Weici, vice-president of the federation, adding that China's output of power equipment already makes up half of the world's total."There is also less demand for heavy machinery used in steel production because the industry is eliminating outdated productivity, thus reducing market demand," Cai said.Fixed-assets investment in the machinery industry which has maintained a growth rate of over 40 percent since 2004 slowed down by 27 percent to 79.8 billion yuan, signaling less reserved strength for further growth.In term of exports, the machinery industry will be exposed to several uncertain factors including a more flexible yuan exchange rate as well as rising labor and raw material costs.The federation forecasts the industry's growth rate will be 20 percent in 2010.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center forecast Thursday that heavy rains would continue during the next 24 hours in northeast China, a region already soaked following weeks of torrential rains.The observatory continued to issue an orange rain alert, the second most serious level, on Thursday, warning that rainstorms would hit most parts of the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Helongjiang over the next 24 hours, adding pressure to the country's efforts to combat floods.Rain-triggered floods have left 1,072 people dead and 619 others missing this year in China. Economic losses were estimated at 210 billion yuan (31.34 billion U.S. dollars), Shu Qingpeng, deputy director of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said Wednesday.Meanwhile, the observatory forecast that heat would continue in south China during the next 24 hours.Temperatures are likely to hit 35 to 38 degrees Celsius in southeast Shaanxi Province, some parts of Sichuan and Guizhou provinces and areas along the Huaihe River. BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhuanet) --Traffic authorities were still struggling to cope with days-long congestion on a major national expressway, nine days after traffic slowed to a snail's pace, and nearby residents are profiting on the latest traffic snarl by overcharging drivers for food.Since August 14, thousands of Beijing-bound trucks have jammed the expressway again, and traffic has stretched for more than 100 kilometers between Beijing and Huai'an in Heibei Province, and Jining in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China National Radio (CNR) reported Sunday.Small traffic accidents or broken-down cars are aggravating the jam, the report said."Insufficient traffic capacity on the National Expressway 110 caused by maintenance construction since August 19 is the major cause of the congestion," a publicity officer with the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, told the Global Times on condition of anonymity Sunday.Under current traffic regulations, the National Expressway 110 (G110), heading northwest from Beijing to Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province, and then heading directly west, is available to trucks with a carrying capacity of eight tons and above. The road suffered serious damage due to the greater volume of heavy trucks.This month there have been more trucks carrying excessive coal or fruit, but the Beijing section of the Beijing-Tibet Expressway is available only to trucks with a weight of less than four tons.The congestion is expected to last for almost a month, since the construction is due for completion September 13.Traffic congestion and road safety have become major concerns for Chinese motorists.For drivers, suffering the congestion on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway is nothing new. BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm "Dianmu" along with gusty winds will strengthen precipitation in north China as it moves north, the national meteorological agency warned on Monday.The typhoon, started Sunday night in the sea about 400 kilometers east of Taiwan, is expected to complicate flood-control efforts in northeast China, where torrential rain-triggered floods have left more than 100 people dead and missing.Heavy rains will hit parts of northeast China's Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces on Tuesday. Northwest China's Gansu and Shaanxi provinces will also be affected, said the National Meteorological Center.The typhoon, the fourth this year, was moving northeast at a speed of 25 km per hour. Its center was located about 390 km east of Zhejiang Province's coast Monday afternoon and will approach southern coast of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, said the center.
