XIANGNING, Shanxi, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Eight miners trapped for 35 hours in a flooded colliery in north China's Shanxi Province were saved early Friday, rescuers said. One miner is still missing.The eight survivors were taken to hospital for treatment. LANZHOU, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China plans to spend 2.23 billion yuan (328 million U.S. dollars) to improve disaster prevention systems in a mountainous northwest China town devastated by a landslide earlier this month, local officials said Tuesday.The planned multi-billion yuan project to prevent further geological disasters in Zhouqu County, south of Gansu Province, had passed reviews by experts from the Ministry of Land and Resources, said Guo Yuhu, vice-director of the provincial land and resources department.The plan is scheduled to be carried out in three phases from 2010 to 2012, Guo said.Guo noted that the project includes improving disaster warning systems, drawing up emergency resettlement plans, conducting a thorough study of the geological disaster hazards, and setting up a capable monitoring network.A late-night avalanche of mud and rocks roared down the mountain slopes in the county seat of Zhouqu on Aug. 8, burying villages and blocking the Bailong River, a major regional river.At least 1,447 people were killed and 318 remain missing, according to the latest government information.The mudslide left a thick layer of sludge, about 5 kilometer long and 500 meters wide, in the center of the town. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were busy searching a possible survivor in a damaged building Wednesday night after they were told cries for help were heard from the building in a mudslide-hit town in northwest China.Zhang Guiquan, an army officer, told Xinhua some residents of Zhouqu County of Gansu Province heard cries from the partially-collapsed building near the Bailong River that overflowed after being blocked by mudslides.About 40 soldiers braving heavy rains and potential mudslides were detecting signs of life near the building after receiving the report from the residents, Zhang said.Hopes of finding any survivors faded as the thunderstorms battered the county seat of Zhouqu Wednesday night, nearly four days after the mudslides hit the town, leaving 1,117 people dead and 627 missing.

HONG KONG, June 21 (Xinhua) -- After working in Beijing for 10 months, U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman said here Monday that trust was very important and was the fuel that powered the U. S.-China relations."Sometimes the tank is full, (and) sometimes it draws down. When it draws down like what happened early this year, the relations become sort of rocky," said Huntsman, who was invited by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce as one of its 150th anniversary speakers.Huntsman, who became U.S. Ambassador to China in August last year, gave five observations on the U.S.-China relations.Firstly, the mandarin-speaking U.S. diplomat said there were a lot less dramas in the U.S.-China relations than many people might imagine despite the occasional alarmist headlines."If you view the U.S.-China relations with a distance, you get the sense that the wheel is coming off the bus. But when in the middle of the relations, you would get less drama," he said."There is more respect ... (and) the ability to communicate on the very very sensitive issues.
