SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local group called the San Diego Rapid Response Network is calling on the community to help asylum-seekers being released throughout San Diego County. On Monday, the group held a press conference explaining how they have been helping the migrants as they are released by ICE, awaiting their asylum hearing. The network is made up of several local churches, the local ACLU, and Casa Cornelia. Volunteers say they have been helping migrants by providing shelter, food, and medical services. They say they've also made travel arrangements to help the migrants get to their final destination. Volunteers tell 10News the migrants are released with no resources and sometimes late at night. The group says they felt the need to help after ICE ended their policy of connecting the migrants with a family member or a sponsor before their release. ICE tells 10News they always plan for releases during the daylight hours but say sometimes things can get delayed since it is a multi-agency effort. They told us of only one instance where the group was released after sundown. The rapid response network is hoping the community will help with monetary donations so they can continue providing their services. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego guitarist is bringing smiles and lifting spirits at Sharp Memorial Hospital.Mark Shatz performs for patients and anyone who walks by.“I've been a volunteer for four years and I come three afternoons a week to do this,” said Shatz. “I get a lot of thumbs up, a lot of smiles.”Shatz learned how to play guitar when he was 12 years old. He performed with a few garage bands but stopped for 33 years.“Wouldn’t you know it, somebody handed me a guitar and said ‘would you play happy birthday’,” Shatz remembered.Shatz had the idea to play for patients when he was visiting his wife in the hospital.“My wife was happy, there was a friend visiting my wife that was happy, and the patient in the other bed…I couldn't believe the reaction of the patient in the other bed,” said Shatz. Technology has provided flexibility in how and where we do our jobs, but when we consider how to ‘Make it in San Diego,’ we found working remotely can also put money back in your pocket. Ashley Goggins is a prime example and is one of over 8 million people in the United States who work remotely. “I’m a customer success manager for a software company,” says Goggins.Her company is headquartered in Chicago, but Ashley does her job from her living room in San Diego. “I typically wake up around 6:00 in the morning, and my calls start coming in around 6:30,” adds Goggins. “The great part about that is I don’t have to spend time getting ready, eating breakfast right away, or sitting in the car.”Goggins is part of a growing trend. Especially in the employment sectors of management, business, and science where working remotely is a valuable option for some employees. “Many industries that are prevalent in San Diego lend themselves to remote work,” says Kevin Fowler. Kevin Fowler is a writer for Volusion and author of the study. His research shows San Diego is one of the top cities in the nation when it comes to employees working remotely full-time. And for many trying to ‘Make it in San Diego,’ working remotely has its financial benefits. “The peripheral costs of working on location add up to about ,000 per year,” says Fowler.That’s right. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A restaurant and dollar store were damaged Sunday morning after a fire started in Lincoln Park.The fire started inside the Herencias Mexican Food restaurant around 6 a.m. on the 5000 block of Logan Avenue.Crews arrived on scene and the fire was knocked out by 8 a.m.No one was inside the restaurant at the time of the blaze, but fire crews say a neighboring Family Dollar store was damaged.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 463
