NEW YORK CITY — Complaints of fireworks are booming in New York City. There were 1,737 calls about fireworks recorded with 311 in the first half of June, which is more than 80 times the amount in the same time period last year.Brooklyn has had more complaints than any other borough. Borough President Eric Adams doesn't want to see attempts to end the fireworks turn into "fireworks between the police and the community.""It's time for all those who call 311, who don't want heavy-handed policing, it's time to come out of your homes and talk to the young people or the people on your block who are setting fireworks off," he said.Fed up, fatigued or just fascinated, some are turning to social media to ask some form of the same question: What's up with the fireworks? Some suspect they may be shows of support for the protesters following the death of George Floyd. Others wonder whether they're simply a way of blowing off steam after being stuck inside by restrictions meant to limit the spread of the coronavirus. This story was originally published by Cristian Benavides with content from the Associated Press on WPIX in New York City. 1147
NEW YORK (AP) — Apple is the first U.S. company to boast a market value of trillion, just two years after it became the first to reach trillion. Apple shares have gained nearly 60% this year as the company overcame the shutdown of factories in China that produce the iPhone and the closure of its retail sales amid the coronavirus pandemic. The company’s hugely loyal customer base trust its products so much that they continued to buy iPhones and other devices online while stuck at home. Apple recently reported blowout earnings for the April-June quarter.Apple has been at the vanguard of a group of Big Tech companies that are increasingly taking over people’s lives — and the stock market. Just five companies — Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook and Google’s parent company — account for nearly 23% of the S&P 500’s entire value. 853

NEW YORK — Businessman and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has filed papers to enter the already crowded Democratic field in the race for mayor of New York City in 2021. Yang filed papers with the New York City Campaign Finance Board Wednesday to join the race. Yang, a CNN commentator following his run for president, now arguably has the highest national profile of any of the candidates. The former ambassador for global entrepreneurship under President Barack Obama has not officially announced his run. Yang grew up in Westchester County, went to law school at Columbia and began his legal career in New York City. The NYC CFB said that Yang is joining the city’s -to- matching funds program. You can find out how that works here. The field in the Democratic primary is already awash with candidates with profiles both local and nationwide. Soon-to-be former Congressman Max Rose, City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Erik Adams, former national HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, Citigroup executive Raymond McGuire, City Councilmember Carlos Menchaca and former counsel to Mayor Bill De Blasio Maya Wiley are just some of the candidates who have declared on the Democratic side. NEW YORK (AP) — Fans have remembered John Lennon on the 40th anniversary of the former Beatle's death with flowers, candles and songs in New York's Central Park. In the Strawberry Fields section steps from where he was shot, musicians played Tuesday. Photos of Lennon and other memorabilia ringed the inlaid "Imagine" mosaic. Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono, posted on social media an image of Lennon's bloody eyeglasses and listed the number of people she said has been killed by guns in the U.S. since his death. Living bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr both made posts with images of them in their younger days with Lennon."A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. I will always be proud and happy to have known and worked with this incredible Scouser! X love Paul," McCartney tweeted. 843
