SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a law that would give judges a say on whether to list someone as a sex offender for having oral or anal sex with a minor. The bill — touted as bringing legal equality to LGBTQ defendants — was signed Friday. Currently, judges can decide whether to put someone on the sex offender registry only if the case involved a man having voluntary vaginal intercourse. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The western Joshua tree will be considered for protection under the California Endangered Species Act because of threats from climate change and habitat destruction. The state Fish and Game Commission on Tuesday voted to accept a petition that provides the yucca plants protected status for a year while the agency conducts a study. After the review, commissioners will determine whether the species should be formally protected under the law. The petition by the Center for Biological Diversity came amid rising concern about the future of the crazy-limbed trees with spiky leaves that have come to symbolize the Mojave Desert and draw throngs to Joshua Tree National Park. 708

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California’s attorney general has dropped a lawsuit seeking the names and contact information of every person who used one of the state Republican Party’s unofficial ballot drop boxes. The party used the boxes to collect ballots in some counties with closely contested U.S. House races. It’s legal in California to collect completed ballots and turn them in on behalf of voters. But state law says only county election officials are allowed to deploy ballot drop boxes. Friday, the attorney general’s office announced it was able to ensure that voters’ ballots were counted. California Republican Party officials say the lawsuit was a political ploy. 684

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A billion-dollar plan to upgrade California’s water system would increase a ratepayer’s water bill upwards of a month.  However, the Metropolitan Water District and Department of Water Resources said the upgrade is necessary to update a 50-year-old system, improve water reliability, and protect the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta environment.“It’s absolutely essential that we take care of this,” said Department of Water Resources Director Grant Davis. “This resource is akin to the heart and lungs of the state of California.”San Diego County gets roughly 30% of its water from the delta.  MWD officials said it’s still cheaper than desalination or purified recycled water. If approved by several state water agencies and organizations, California WaterFix would take years to complete.  The Metropolitan Water District, which sells the Delta water to the San Diego County Water Authority, will vote on WaterFix October 10th.  The Westlands Water District voted against the project Tuesday.  However, water officials were unclear what impact that would have on the overall project. 1150
