(KGTV) - A grieving dog owner says a routine surgery turned deadly after his dog suffered burns during a brief stay.In early May, John San Filippo brought 11-year-old Sofia, a Boxer mix, to the Bastet Veterinary Hospital for knee surgery."Dropped her off in the morning and picked up her up in the afternoon. She was doing great," said San Filippo.Six days after the surgery, San Filippo found several oozing sores on her right side. The vet told him the electric blanket used to warm Sofia had somehow burned her. "I was stunned, but at that point, it was just three little spots," said San Filippo.Within weeks, the full extent of the burns emerged: 3rd- and 4th-degree burns on over 40% of her body. Sofia developed sepsis and pneumonia, before she died in early June."Just broke down crying ... brought her in for knee surgery and my dog was barbecued," said San Filippo. San Filippo has filed a complaint with the State Veterinary Medical Board and wants the business shut down.Bastet Veterinary Hospital released the following statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sofia, which was a result of thermal burns derived from the malfunction of our patient warming system. We are committed to working with all involved parties to help recoup financial losses, and our hearts grieve along with Sofia'a family for their loss."Experts suggest asking your veterinarian about how they warm animals during anesthesia. EL CAJON, Calif (KGTV) - The Cajon Valley Union School District has found a unique tool to help them teach thousands of refugee students, many of whom don't speak English.They're using soccer."The kids were exhausted after six hours of academics every day," says District Director of Community Engagement Michael Serban. "Time after school can be spent differently."Three days a week, English-learning refugee students take part in the Power Up program. They spend 45 minutes playing soccer, using the game to introduce words and concepts. They spend another 45 minutes in class working what they heard on the pitch."You can see the growth in the students' vocabulary," says Serban. "When they go back in the classroom, they're not just listening. They're using the words that they practiced to increase the basic foundational vocabulary."The program is only in its second year at Cajon Valley, but the problem of working with refugees spans decades.Since 1975, San Diego County has brought in 86,598 refugees. That's third-most in the state. Many of them settle in East County, where their children enroll in local schools."A lot of the students coming to us from refugee camps may not have been in school," explains Superintendent Dr. David Miyashiro. "They're coming to us in 7th or 8th grade with very low English language skills and also with literacy issues in their own language."Serban says families had been asking for a soccer program to help the kids adapt. The district teamed up with Sports for Learning to develop the curriculum.In addition to the soccer and vocabulary, the students get social and emotional counseling to help them cope with the trauma from their home country. It also teaches them the social norms of being in an American school.A few non-refugee students also participate in the class, to make sure the students make friends outside of the refugee community.The district also is a pioneer in helping all of its students learn about careers and options after school. They use the World of Work curriculum to help gauge the kids' interest and aptitude in a variety of career fields.That program helps the refugee students feel like they have a long-term future in America."Before we ask kids to learn to read, we have to show them why they need to learn to read," says Dr. Miyashiro. "These curricula bring relevance to their learning and connectivity to their future."The Power Up program is funded, in part, through a grant from the Refugee School Impact Program as part of the US Department of Health and Human Services. 2563

(KGTV)— Family and friends of 19-year-old Kiera Bergman gathered at the Ronald Reagan Community Center to celebrate her life. A month-long search ended in a body discovery in the Arizona desert. Her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old John Clark is accused of killing her. Kiera Bergman was the eldest daughter of the Bergman-Bragg family. Her mother Kiersten Bragg remembered Kiera had a strong personality, even before she was born.“I never forget I would always crave SpaghettiOs and that was one of her favorite things to eat,” Bragg said. She said as a teen Kiera would crave the canned spaghetti. Her family told 10News, Kiera was a spunky, playful, chunky toddler. "I always compared her to the Michelin man because she had tons of rolls everywhere,” her mother laughed. Then she became a big sister to Braydee. Kiera was silly, artistic, a talented singer, with a big heart. In his speech at the ceremony, her grandfather shared the time she spent her first ever paycheck from her part-time job on the homeless.“She bought the lady lunch. And I don't know many teenagers who will take their first paycheck and do that. So that kind of shows you what kind of girl she was,” Jim Bergman said, in tears. They said Kiera hoped to one day combine her giving personality with her dream job - America's best hairstylist.“Her dream was to at least once or twice a month, go to the homeless and do their hair and make them feel better about themselves,” Bragg said. But she was not able to live out her dream. Her boyfriend at the time, John Clark, convinced her to drop out of Cosmetology school. The two them moved to Arizona in March. Her boyfriend is accused of killing and leaving Bergman in the Arizona desert."That's what breaks my heart.
