SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A "Day of Service" around Mission Bay will honor Maruta Gardner, the woman killed by a drunken driver while she was painting over graffiti in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.Half a dozen service projects will take place around the bay all day Friday, Nov. 3."She was just a firecracker," said Dawn Reilly, one of the organizers with Beautiful MB. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men were shot Saturday evening while standing on a sidewalk in the Mountain View area of San Diego.It happened about 6 p.m. in the 1000 block of South 45th Street, said San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The two victims were standing on the sidewalk with others, Heims said. "A vehicle was eastbound on Newton Avenue when it stopped in the intersection and someone inside fired multiple rounds at the group."A 44-year-old man was shot in the head and paramedics took him to a hospital, the officer said. "At this time, his injuries are non-life-threatening."A 29-year-old man was shot in the right arm and driven to a hospital by an unknown person, Heims said. His wound was not believed life-threatening.The car involved in the shooting was described as an early model small, light-colored sedan. 830

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2-year-old girl allegedly abducted by her father in Chollas View, triggering an area Amber Alert, was found safe in Escondido Tuesday morning, San Diego police said.According to police, young Charli-Fae Harris was last seen with her father, Lafayette Harris, in the 1000 block of 47th Street at around 5:30 p.m. Monday.Police were notified of the girl’s disappearance by her mother. SDPD officials confirmed 31-year-old Lafayette Harris is under a restraining order related to domestic violence.After an Amber Alert was issued for the child and her father, police located Harris’ white Saturn vehicle in a parking garage near UC San Diego shortly before 6 a.m. However, Harris and his daughter were nowhere to be found.Harris was eventually tracked down at a construction site near UC San Diego Health System in La Jolla. ABC 10News learned Harris, who works at the construction site, was taken into custody without incident.Charli-Fae was found safe just before 8:15 a.m. in an Escondido apartment. Escondido Police said a woman connected to the child's father was watching the news when she realized she had the child police were looking for in her care, so she then called police to alert them. It's unclear if she knew the child had been taken.The girl will be reunited with her mother later Tuesday.Police said Harris will most likely face kidnapping charges and charges related to violating the restraining order against him, and said there could be more charges added as the investigation continues. 1536

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three newly activated teams of chaplains certified as handlers of specially trained service dogs will offer added emotional support services to the employees of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the agency announced Tuesday."We are excited to introduce our three canines," San Diego Fire Chief Colin Stowell said. "They are highly trained and available to our employees for emotional support in dealing with traumatic or emotionally challenging incidents. ... Using canines has proven successful in so many other areas, and we know these dogs will fit right in with our fire family."The SDFRD Crisis Response Canine program will be administered by chaplains Debi Arnold, Dan Guarrero and Betsy Salzman, making use of the skills of their dogs, Ty, Bodie and Genoa.Ty is a 6-year-old mini goldendoodle owned, trained and handled by Arnold, who bought him when he was 12 weeks old. They have two years' experience with a local trauma intervention program.Bodie, a 2-year-old Labrador retriever, was trained and placed by Next Step Service Dogs, which prepares canines for active-duty military personnel, veterans and first responders who have post-traumatic stress disorder and/or traumatic brain injury, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.The total cost for Bodie and his training was about ,000. Guarrero is responsible for the dog's ongoing costs, such as food and veterinary bills, with support from the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation.Genoa is a 2-year-old Labrador retriever who lives with and is handled by Salzman. The chaplains and their canines have completed more than 120 hours of training, and they will continue to receive instruction through NSSD, Munoz said.The SDFRD's chaplaincy program is made up of 17 volunteer religious leaders from a variety of faiths. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellationThe camp was canceled, but days later Mayor Faulconer issued a statement saying the camp would go on. The girls are thankful the camp is back on.
