SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California has temporarily banned overnight camping in some parts of its park after several interactions between campers and foraging bears. The decision was made to close down back-country camping in the Twin, Rainbow, Swan and Snag Lake areas after multiple visitors reported that bears had come to their campsites and searched their backpacks for food. The Sacramento Bee reported that the areas will remain open for hiking, but the park warns visitors to be careful. The National Park Service website said the policy will not only protect campers but “protect the bears by promoting the offending bear(s) to return to normal foraging behavior.” 724

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — Police say a gunman opened fire inside an Illinois bowling alley, killing three people and injuring three others during what authorities believe was a random attack. Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea says a 37-year-old white male suspect is in custody after the shooting Saturday night at Don Carter Lanes. Police were not seeking any other suspects. O'Shea did not immediately release additional information about the person of interest or the victims. A media briefing is expected to be held on Sunday morning.According to WREX, police received a call around 6:55 p.m. Saturday stating someone was shooting inside the bowling alley.WREX reported that police could not confirm the conditions of the three people injured in the shooting, but said at least two teenagers were shot. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Parents of Californians murdered by people now on death row shared gruesome details of their loved ones' killings Thursday as they launched a statewide tour to urge Gov. Gavin Newsom to reverse his moratorium on executions."He was like a thief in the night that stole justice from us," said Phyllis Loya, whose son Larry Lasater Jr. was killed on duty as a police officer.Newsom last month issued a reprieve to the more than 700 people sitting on California's death row, meaning none will be executed as long as he is in office. He also ordered the state to withdraw its lethal injection regulations and dismantled the "death chamber" at San Quentin State Prison.California's death row is the nation's largest, but the state has not executed anyone since 2006.
