GENEVA —The coronavirus pandemic “continues to accelerate," with a doubling of cases over the last six weeks, the World Health Organization chief says.WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says nearly 16 million cases have now been reported to the U.N. health agency, with more than 640,000 deaths worldwide.Tedros will convene on Thursday WHO’s emergency committee, a procedural requirement six months after the agency’s declaration of a public health emergency of international concern, made on Jan. 30 for the coronavirus outbreak. The panel will advise him on the pandemic.“COVID-19 has changed our world,” he told reporters from WHO’s Geneva headquarters on Monday. “It has brought people, communities and nations together — and driven them apart.”He cited some factors that have proven effective in some countries, including political leadership, education, increased testing and hygiene and physical distancing measures. 945

Here's what's happening in the political world Saturday, March 24, 2018.Schwarzenegger: Gov. John Kasich would be 'a great alternative' to Trump-- Former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is touting Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich as a "great alternative" to President Donald Trump. The actor and former head of California told CNN's Michael Smerconish he thinks Gov. Kasich should run against President Trump, should Trump fail to make good on his promises to voters. "People are going to judge the President before they go to the polls by his performance," Schwarzenegger, who is a Republican, said in an interview. "If Trump does a great job, then there's no reason to replace him. But what I'm saying is that John Kasich is a great alternative should he (Trump) not perform, because we don't know yet. We are only one year into his term."Schwarzenegger added he thinks the Ohio governor would be better than any candidate the Democratic party could offer. Kasich unsuccessfully fought for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.Read more. 1118

GREELEY, Colorado – Weld County’s top prosecutors and Frederick police held a news conference Monday afternoon to brief the media on more details of the Chris Watts case after he was sentenced earlier in the day to several life terms in prison without the possibility of parole in the deaths of his pregnant wife and young daughters.Flanked by fellow prosecutors, Frederick Police Department representatives and the county coroner, 19th Judicial District Attorney Michael Rourke started the news conference by thanking the law enforcement agencies involved in the case as well as the family of Shanann Watts for “serving justice” in her name and those of her two daughters and unborn child.Much of what Rourke and his deputy district attorney, Steve Wrenn, discussed at the news conference centered on new details that had not been released about the case, the autopsy reports for the three which were released after the news conference, and what will happen next for Chris Watts as he makes his way to prison for the rest of his life.Rourke said that he doesn’t believe Watts will ever truthfully answer as to why he killed his family though his parents pleaded with him during sentencing Monday to come clean and atone in the future. He said that Watts’ attorneys approached prosecutors first about the plea deal and that he did not accept until after speaking with Shanann’s family, the Rzuceks, in North Carolina beforehand. The Rzuceks addressed Watts and the case in court Monday.“That was a conversation I was only going to have with them face to face,” Rourke said.He reiterated that he and the family had talked about the state of the death penalty in Colorado and its future. Rourke said that he and the family believed that even if Watts were to receive the death penalty, neither were sure that he would ever be executed in their lifetimes.“Sandra (Shanann’s mother) leaned across the table and said, ‘Why haven’t you done that?’” Rourke said of accepting the plea deal. “That helped the family get some needed closure.”Rourke said he also spoke with Judge Marcelo Kopcow Sunday ahead of the sentencing hearing to give him more information, including the unredacted affidavit, so that the court could impose a “just and fair sentence under the circumstances.” 2278

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. -- A California man has a lot to be thankful for after he reportedly fought off a black bear to save the life of his pit bull named Buddy, according to CBS News. The day before Thanksgiving, Buddy was outside playing near his home in Nevada County, California. Kaleb Bentham said something didn’t sound right.“I heard a growl, looked about 75-100 feet down, and the bear was dragging him by his head, had his head in his mouth,” Benham told CBS13.Benham saved Buddy from a shelter a few years ago, and didn’t hesitate to rescue him again.“I just ran down there, plowed into the bear, tackled it and grabbed it by the throat and started hitting it in the face and the eye until it let go,” Benham said.Benham then describes the frantic search for a veterinary hospital that was open during the pandemic. The closest option was closed. 861

Heather Hyland, a self-proclaimed bug nerd, has found a love for mosquitos despite the diseases they carry.“I have loved bugs I would say since I was about 2 years old,” Hyland said.Initially a public information officer for the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District in Southern California, she said her bug fascination was because so many people don't like them. So, as a child, Hyland thought, someone should love them. That love turned into entomology.“They’re so interesting. They’re these intricate little tiny bugs with the capability to do big things. If you look at how prehistoric a mosquito is, it has six mouth parts. There’s so many different things they can do that are big,” Hyland said.Mosquitos can transmit disease, sense heat, even smell carbon dioxide coming out of human bodies. In Orange County, vector control employees normally see an average of 24 mosquitos in a trap. Now, they're seeing 118."We do look at the region - Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego - have already had positive West Nile mosquitos in their traps,” she said. “Our district lines are invisible. There’s no line (to) say ‘no mosquitos or birds with West Nile, don’t come this way.’”It's only a matter of time before those county and state lines are blurred. Mosquitos don't see barriers. And then, there's the coronavirus factor.“People are staying home due to COVID regulations so people are gardening, more projects, more plants, watering more,” Hyland said. “Those lead to cryptic sources so you’ll have little tiny pockets around your yard with standing water.”Some aren't maintaining pools due to financial reasons. And pools are a large breeding ground. In Lee County, Florida, inspectors are shown on social media checking storm drains which are big breeding sources. They're also fighting the bug battle from above, posting their helicopter images on social media, documenting the effort to go after "salt marsh" mosquitoes. 1945
