A surprise birthday party that resulted in 18 people testing positive for the coronavirus has left a North Texas man horrified as his father continues to fight for his life in a hospital intensive care unit.Ron Barbosa, who is married to a doctor and refused to attend the May 30 party for his daughter-in-law because of safety concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic, said those hospitalized included his parents, both in their 80′s, and his sister, who is also battling breast cancer.Barbosa said his nephew, unknowingly infected with the virus, hosted last month’s gathering of 25 people that only lasted a few hours and followed the state’s latest health standards. During the party, he said the nephew interacted with seven relatives, who subsequently contracted the virus and spread it to 10 other family members, including two young children.“When people started getting sick, we really let everyone have it,” Barbosa told WFAA-TV. “We knew this was going to happen, I mean, this whole time this has been going on we’ve been terrified.”Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday said Texas would halt its aggressive reopening as it deals with a surge in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations that has made the state a virus hot spot. Statewide, the number of COVID-19 patients has more than doubled in two weeks. Texas has reported more than 11,000 new cases in the previous two days alone.Barbosa’s mother, Carole, who stopped by the function to drop something off, tested positive for coronavrius June 6 and was admitted to the hospital a week later.Barbosa said his father, Frank, who didn’t attend the get-together but later contracted COVID-19, was hospitalized June 17. He said his dad is currently “hanging on by a thread” in the ICU while on life support.“It’s heartbreaking,” Barbosa said, holding back tears.Frank received a plasma donation Wednesday from a recovered coronavirus patient, according to Barbosa’s Facebook page. Barbosa said he hopes the procedure will save his dad’s life.“Prayers were answered today,” Barbosa wrote on Facebook. “Now he (Frank) needs to get well for mom and the Barbosa Family.”Barbosa said his family remains united despite feeling a pendulum of emotions over the past few weeks.“We were horrified. People couldn’t believe that they took it to a family member,” he said. “But now, we’re holding on together.”Carole has returned home to recover, according to a Facebook page the family created, which indicated that Barbosa’s sister, Kathy, is feeling better and back home to recuperate. 2529

A Nashville high school football coach has been arrested on a charge of soliciting an underage student.According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, 25-year-old Weldon Garlington messaged a 17-year-old girl on Instagram asking her for sex. His Instagram profile states he is a football coach and associate dean of students at RePublic High School, a charter school near Brick Church Pike in north Nashville.Garlington was arrested late Thursday night after he allegedly confessed to police about having sent the messages. The conversation reportedly started with private Instagram messages to her over the weekend, asking the girl when she would turn 18-years-old. He also asked if she wanted to do anything with him "like sex lol." He later offered to reimburse her gas money to drive to his apartment. The affidavit claimed, the next day, he texted her saying, "My bad about all this... Let's just act like none of this was ever talked about."Garlington was booked into jail on 0,000 bond and was charged with solicitation of a minor. Because of her age and the fact that no physical contact was ever made, the charge is a misdemeanor.RePublic High School later released the following statement:  1257

A suburban Atlanta police officer resigned after his department said he used foul language and inappropriate tactics during the arrest of a 65-year-old grandmother during a traffic stop, recorded on a police dashboard camera.Alpharetta Officer James Legg had been called in as backup during a May 4 traffic stop because the Lyft driver would not sign a ticket and refused another officer's order to get out of her car, officials said.In a letter to Alpharetta Public Safety Director John Robison released Friday, Legg said he felt he behaved appropriately and followed his training."I judged her actions to be passive resistance and used very limited force to end a multiple minute encounter with the suspect," he said. "Maybe I should not have used profanity, but its immediate effectiveness is not questionable and I do believe I acted reasonably under the circumstances."Dashcam video showed Legg pointing at the driver and shouting, "You're not in charge. Shut the f---- up and get out of the car." 1010

A proposed bill moving through California's legislature would — hopefully — eliminate fears of an awful driver's license photo.SB-1407 would allow drivers to have the ultimate say in their license photo. The bill would let drivers take up to three pictures at the Department of Motor Vehicles and then choose which one they like best.Drivers would also be allowed to have their photo taken outside of the DMV by a pre-approved photography center. While all of this sounds great for drivers who loathe their license photo, it could come at a cost. The bill says there would be an extra fee for each additional photo but didn't specify how much. That revenue would be put toward driver's education programs at public schools. So far, the bill has passed through the state Senate Transportation Committee Tuesday and has been referred next to the Committee on Appropriations. 888

A Mesa woman is taking action for her kids after claiming to notice an influx of scorpions at her apartment complex. Kayla Balodis, her fiancé, and two young children moved into an apartment complex at the Lakeview at Superstition Springs in Mesa six months ago.    During the walk-through, she says she found scorpions in the apartment, but the management told her it was likely just because the unit had been vacant for so long. When the family moved in; however, Balodis says they kept coming across more and more scorpions.   "It's like a nightmare; we're living in a nightmare. This place is basically infested. It's not just one or two. They're everywhere," said Balodis. She says she took her complaints to the front office, but didn't have much success."They kinda act like it's no big deal," she said.  The scorpions went away for the winter but have started to return now that the temperature is heating back up. So to prove her point, Saturday night Balodis and her fiancé went out with a blacklight and fishbowl to capture as many as they could.Balodis said they found them along the walls, on the roof, on the base of trees, and crawling up palm trees. She says within 20 minutes they had caught about 40 scorpions. Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out to the front office and was told because of the holiday management couldn't answer any questions until Monday, but assured reporters that they handle each concern promptly.  Within an hour of the call, Balodis says she got an email from the front office telling her they'll reach out to pest control again and the situation will be taken care of.  But Balodis says the only thing she wants is to get out for the safety of her kids."I can't live like this; I'm afraid of the summer because we moved in September and we had an issue. I don't want to see what the summer is gonna look like," said Balodis. On Monday, KNXV returned to Balodis's apartment with a pest control expert for tips on how to insect-proof an apartment. Ryan Michel, with Defense Pest Control, says scorpions can fit through cracks the width of a credit card. "Your first line of defense is to make sure all windows and doors are sealed well. If you can see light through a crack, a scorpion can most likely get in through there," said Michel. Michel says the best thing to do to prevent scorpions are glue boards or “sticky boards” and to place them near entryways and near cracks where scorpions can enter.  2590
