INDIANAPOLIS — Just to get home, families living in an Indianapolis neighborhood had to contend with large holes in an alley that were filled with water. After several complaints to the city went unanswered, one woman took matters into her own hands."They were huge. They looked like lakes. Like a little lake in the alley," Jannifer Denise said.Denise said driving down the alley just off Keystone Avenue has been hazardous for years. The alley is the only way to access her father's home, so she called the Mayor's Action Center. Her complaint has been open since 2015."The lady was like, 'I understand, they just aren't fixing the alleys right now,'" Denise said.However, matters became more urgent this summer after her father had a stroke and was diagnosed with dementia. He now requires home care."Getting help sounds great. But I panicked when they said they were going to send people out to the house and I thought how are they going to get to him?" Denise said.She hired a company and paid 0 to have stones installed on the alley."My dad said it's the city's responsibility. I said, 'It's their responsibility, but it's my problem. I have to make sure you are taken care of so I have to have someone come out and fill it,'" Denise said.The company hired to do the work is upset because they feel Denise shouldn't have to pay to get the work done."We sent out somebody and he called me and said, 'Oh, yeah. This is terrible. One load of stone will not be enough for this. The holes are so big the cars are sinking in,'" Anne McCurdy, a dispatcher with Brookfield Sand and Gravel, said.McCurdy has taken a special interest in the situation. She even called the Mayor's Action Center because she was worried Denise will have the same issue in two years."I just hope somebody can take the initiative and fix the problem," McCurdy said. "I don't think she should have to pay for it. If the city could step up, that would be awesome. Would be nice to take care of the gentleman."The Mayor's Action Center said they have more than 2,300 open cases for potholes in alleys, but it could include duplicate calls for the same chuckhole.Ben Easley, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works, said it is now DPW's current direction to prioritize addressing requests over street rehabilitation projects. However, he said more funding for transportation infrastructure maintenance would allow them to get a place to better address alleys in the future.Easley said they do not receive gas tax revenue for non-name streets like alleys, so only larger thoroughfares and residential streets are considered when allocating funding to Marion County. Since alleys are less traveled, he said streets with higher traffic volumes must remain the priority.Easley also said the Street Maintenance Team, which was introduced this year, specializes in fixing residential streets that would likely not be addressed with large infrastructure rehabilitation contracts."With the addition of the Street Maintenance Team, it is indeed possible that DPW will get to a point where we might be able to prioritize alley improvements. Some even advertise exactly what we've been searching online to buy, but one Florida woman is sharing a warning about an ad she was scammed by.Kinga Trzaska of Lake Worth, Florida is over the moon excited about the arrival of her third baby in May."Yeah, that's him," she said as she pointed to a 3D sonogram picture. "We can't wait till he gets here."Her youngest child right now is 9 years old, so she's having to buy all new things for her baby boy and she was searching online for a car seat that could turn into a stroller."I'm a big Facebook user and these ads came up and this car seat I've been looking at, that's normally 9 popped up for .90. So, that was a steal," said Trzaska.She didn't realize the deal was too good to be true because, on its face, the website looked legitimate."It shows up as a secure site," said Trzaska as she hovered her mouse over the lock by the https URL, a sign that the sight is secure. "It shows up as 51 reviews and they're all great."Trzaska bought two car seat strollers and was excited when she got an email that her order was received and would be processed. But, that's the only email she ever got."A month later, no confirmation, no tracking number," she said.She said she contacted the phone number on the website and it did not work. She also said she sent emails to the company and would get a generic response to view her order online. Then, she got skeptical."I googled the name of the merchant, it was like so many complaints," she added.There it was. Many others like her warned that this was a scam. The Better Business Bureau's scam tracker site found people all over the country who have reported being scammed by the same website."The only thing I kept thinking about is how many other expecting mothers this is happening to," said Trzaska.You can look up a website's registration by searching "who is (company's domain)" on Google. The website 1supershop.com was created in 2017. It's registered in Tokyo and the domain is on GoDaddy.com's server. You can email Go Daddy about abuse on any site on their server at abuse@GoDaddy.com. You can also report an ad on Facebook by clicking the ... icon next to the ad.Trzaska plans to file a complaint and has reached out to Facebook too. She got her money back through her bank and now just wants to warn others."I don’t want any other people to be in this position," she said.The website 1supershop.com only has an international number and email contact. Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach emailed the contact and is waiting to hear back. It’s been more than four months since Elana Mugdan used her smartphone. Mugdan was the winner of Vitamin Water’s contest that asked participants to go smartphone free for a year for 0,000. When she found out she was selected, Mugdan was thrilled, stating, “I would love to get rid of my phone for a year and reclaim my life.”While most of us wouldn’t ditch the smartphone for an entire year, Mugdan was up for the challenge. She wasn’t completely tech-free, though. Mugdan was allowed to use a computer and a 10-year-old flip phone in case of an emergency. She says the hardest part has been navigating her way around new areas. Mugdan is an author, and she’s currently on a book tour.Her solution? “I go on Google Maps [and] print out directions,” she says.Despite some frustration, going without a phone has given her clarity and she encourages others to cut back.Mugdan recommends first limiting your screen time.
