LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Most teenagers are using Snapchat, Whatsapp, or Instagram. But you need to know, predators are using social media apps too. It's the dark side of Las Vegas. And sex traffickers have learned they can reach beyond runaway teens into the bedrooms of kids in cities such as Summerlin and Anthem. And they're accessing your kids on social media. Adia Lancaster is with New Hope Foundation International, an organization that educates our community about sex trafficking. "We have two lives now. An offline life and an online life. Whatever app has social capability, they are recruiting off of these apps."Parents never think something like this can happen to their teen. But predators are patient and smart.  Often they will target multiple students at a specific school at the same time. If they can interact with enough students online, other teens are more likely to think they are safe because they have friends in common. That's all it takes for your teen to let down their guard on social media.Worldwide, the average age of a girl pulled into sex trafficking is 12 or 13. Here in Las Vegas, the average age is about 15 or 16.  That's the age Michelle Balan's daughter was when a stranger made friends with her on social media."It was, there is a party let's go. The girls would go. A group of guys would go. They hang out. It became a friendship. Then it evolved. These guys said, 'We want to make some money'."Sadly, Michelle's daughter was fooled into thinking it was no big deal to sell her body. But since she was still living at home, it didn't take long for Mom to catch on."She started coming home with items I didn't pay for and she didn't have a job. There was no explainable way she could have these items."Michelle did what every parent must do. She became a social media detective: 1888

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — Video showed a female duo running from an East County home carrying items, as a helpless homeowner who watched it all unfold on his doorbell camera. At 6 p.m. Thursday, a woman is seen walking up to the front door and appears to be looking for something. Eventually, she wanders to the back of the home, and that's when a loud sound is heard. That sound is believed to the sound of a screen being torn off and a back window being forced open. Don says watching on a Ring camera app was the homeowner, his father, who was out of town with his mother in Missouri. His dad then triggered the alarm and watched as the woman holding several items got into a car in the driveway. Moments later, another woman carrying a box stuffed with items jumped into the same car."I think he started to panic. He's not there and somebody's in the house," said Don.The homeowner is heard asking through speaker "Who are you? Who are you?" before the women drive off."They called me in a panic. They didn't have number for local sheriff," said Don. He called 9-1-1 and deputies arrived minutes later. But the women were long gone. According to the video, they weren't in the home long."In a seven-minute time frame, they went through literally every drawer in the house," said Don.Stolen from the home: A coin collection and dozens of pieces of jewelry belonging to his father and mother. Many of them were sentimental."They have granddaughters and great-granddaughters, things they wanted to keep in the family," said Don.If you recognize the female duo in the video, call the San Diego Sheriff's Department at 858-565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1671

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Lakeside began as a destination town for San Diegans and has continued to be that escape.Located about 21 miles east of downtown San Diego, Lakeside is an easy trip through Central San Diego down Interstate 8. The city is prime as an escape from the hustle of the Gaslamp District, something many San Diegans took advantage of in the city's early days. It's four lakes make Lakeside perfect for outdoor recreation, including boating and fishing, camping, and hiking.Part of that outdoor heritage is the Lakeside Rodeo and equestrian activities. Lakeside is full of farms, ranches, and dairies and home to the second largest Western parade in the state. And of course, for those looking for a little fun, Lakeside is home to Borona Casino and Resort.Brief history...Lakeside wasn't a "place to live" until about 1886, when the El Cajon Valley Land Company began promoting the town. Even still, there were few residents and homes in the area.As small businesses cropped up through the late 1800s, and San Diego's population skyrocketed between 1886 and 1887, Lakeside became known as a resort town. The railroad line into Lakeside became the most traveled in the county — before the railroad, daily stages took four hours between San Diego and Lakeside. But as time went on, Lakeside became less of a resort destination and more of a small town in its own right. By 1937, one man remarked in the Lakeside Farmer that the region looked very different from 1898, "with its paved highway and autos standing on both sides ... there was lots of business in the old days."Things to do...Lakeside Rodeo: The first organized rodeo was held in Lakeside in 1920 and remained a big part of the town's history and annual calendar. The rodeo today celebrates the sport's history in Lakeside while providing not only rodeo events, but hosting numerous other community events, concerts, and fundraisers. Lake Jennings: A trip to Lake Jennings gives families the ability to camp, hike, boat, and fish in a scenic areas like Cloister Cove, Siesta Point, Hermit Cove, and Eagle Point. Families may also catch a glimpse of the abundance of wildlife surrounding the lake.Borona Cultural Center & Museum: A dose of history awaits at the Borona Cultural Center & Museum, where guests learn about Native American culture and history in San Diego County. The center includes more than 3,000 artifacts, photographic displays, and archives among its treasures — some pieces dating back as far as 10,000 years. 2522

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Extreme heat remains a top concern for the Southern Nevada Health District. With more than 100 heat-related deaths reported last year, volunteers and health coordinators spent Friday and Saturday surveying Clark County residents on how they were affected by the summer heat. The efforts are part of a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response technique.Jeff Quin, the senior public health preparedness planner at SNHD, says heat exhaustion remains a priority. "We had 123 deaths in 2017 that were heat related and 40 percent of those occurred during the month of July," he said. The summer's sweltering temperatures affect those at home and on the streets. "It's not unique to anyone. Our access and function need population which includes the homeless is a high concern but also children, and our senior Americans," said Quinn.Volunteers Jorge and Rebecca are out surveying the southeast side of Las Vegas. They are hoping residents will fill out a 21-question survey."Mostly we are asking some basic information: do they have water and food for at least three days, where they would go for a cooling station," said Rebecca. "Then we are going to get the results and it's going to inform everybody in the community," said Jorge.Clark County resident Timothy Martin was once vulnerable to the valley's hot weather."After I had that heatstroke, [the doctor] told me, I can't go out, ‘you're going to get nauseous and dizzy,’ and I do. I have to stay indoors when it's hot."The Health District hopes the information they collect will help residents stay cool by developing better emergency response plans. 1681
