SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A catholic priest overseeing a mission in San Diego has been granted temporary relief from the state's COVID-19 restrictions on in-person worship.On Friday, ABC 10News spoke to the attorney representing Father Trevor Burfitt in his legal fight to reopen his Southern California parishes, including St. John Bosco Mission inside the Four Points Sheraton hotel off the 163 and Aero Drive.On Thursday, a Kern County judge issued a preliminary injunction protecting Father Burfitt's churches from COVID-19 restrictions but the ruling does not apply to all churches in the state.“Under the existing blueprint for a safer economy, all of [his] churches are subject or were subject to a total worship ban until the court's ruling yesterday,” said attorney Christopher Ferrara. He added, “That ruling has overturned those restrictions and the churches are now free to operate.”On Friday, San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said that he supported the ruling and added in part, “I think and I always have thought that churches are essential, particularly in these times of high anxiety with having to deal with COVID.”The new ruling stems from a recent lawsuit that Father Burfitt filed against Governor Gavin Newsom and other state and local officials over lockdown measures.The judge ruled in part, "The restrictions at issue here, by effectively barring many from attending religious services, strike at the very heart of the first amendment's guarantee of religious liberty. Before allowing this to occur, we have a duty to conduct a serious examination of the need for such a drastic measure." The ruling goes on to read in part, "The free exercise of religion clause in the California constitution prohibits defendants from treating religious activities worse than comparable secular activities. California's current COVID-related restrictions do exactly that."“Right now, I would say that this decision provides guidance to the public authorities throughout the state and they should follow it,” added Ferrara.Father Burfitt is seeking a permanent injunction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A ceremony was held Wednesday to honor San Diego County law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.87 names were read at noon at the memorial wall at the County Administration Building in downtown San Diego.The fallen law enforcement officers named date back to 1850, and they include San Diego police Officer Jonathan “JD” De Guzman, who was killed in the line of duty in 2016.“They did it because they loved it. They did it because they cared, and it’s just so important that those people, the survivors, know that the citizens appreciate what they did,” said Skip Murphy with the San Diego County Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation.The public joined the memorial on the northwest lawn of the County Administration Building and quietly paid respects.The San Diego Police Department is also holding a memorial ceremony Thursday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  At 14 stories high, The tower apartments in downtown San Diego have some nice views. But when you're trying to get down without an elevator - it can be a challenge. Carol Clark says she was left with no choice but to take the stairs from her 13th-floor apartment to go the grocery store on Thursday afternoon. "I did it today but trust me I was breathing heavy when I came in," she said. Clark is one of the 200 senior residents living in the high rise building - a building designated for people over the age of 65. The residents say they've lost count on how many times they elevator has gone out. That's why they decided to call 10News for help. Although the second elevator was working when 10News arrived, residents tell us that wasn't the case for most of the day. They say it's something that happens a lot lately. "There are people here with walkers and wheelchairs," Clark said. "I'm scared to death for them."One neighbor in a wheelchair broke down in tears during our interview. "It's people's safety," he said. "Not just mine, but everybody else."The building is undergoing renovations - which residents say they appreciate. But they say the upgrades don't make it ok to shut down one of the two elevators and leave them with an elevator that they describe as unreliable at best. "Everybody is extremely upset," Clark said. "And the thing is we don't seem to be getting many answers."The residents told 10News they've taken their concerns to management many times but have seen no changes. They say they hope something is done soon, before an emergency happens and it's too late. 10News called the on-site manager and the property management company but have not yet received a response. "It's a stressful situation not knowing if something happens are they gonna be able to get downstairs," Clark said.   1901

"That’s just my opinion."Rosati said he believes people were working out a safe distance apart."I know it’s very safe, there’s disinfectants everywhere, they’re wiping everything down all day long in between each person," he explained. "If anyone even slightly has the slightest cough or sniffle, the owner, Rick, asks them to leave."The San Diego Police Department said The Gym choosing to stay open is in violation of the county public health order, which is a misdemeanor. Police officers can give citations and even make arrests.However, officers may also just contact the business, educate them on the details of the order, and try to get them to comply."Everybody is using precautions and I don’t think that they should shut it down," said Rosati. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Border Patrol agent was injured after someone threw a rock at his patrol car, according to US Customs and Border Protection. The agency tweeted out several photos Monday morning that show the agent with a large cut on his face and what appears to be shattered glass in the patrol car. “Our agents face dangers like this one while maintaining the security of our nation,” the agency said.
