CLEVELAND — Police in northeast Ohio says they've collected multiple handguns in the past month that have been modified to turn the firearm into an automatic weapon.In one case, 20-year-old Toriano Leakes, Jr. of Cleveland was indicted on two counts of illegal possession of a machine gun.Bedford Police say the Glock handgun they confiscated from Leaks' car was modified to include a "select-fire auto sear." The device is also sometimes known as a "select fire switch."According to Justin Herdman, a US Attorney in the Northern District of Ohio, the modified handguns can fire 30 rounds in the span of five to six seconds.“It’s a newer thing hitting the internet because people think it’s cool,” said Assistant Bedford Police Chief Rick Suts.“The second you put that on a gun, it violates the National Firearms Act. It makes it a machine gun which is illegal," he said.Federal authorities say they've seen an increase in the modified handguns and they hope to crack down.“We have seen a significant uptick in people trying to acquire these switches manufactured mostly in China,” Herdman said. DETROIT, Michigan — John Lind is a veteran and military historian who is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.It’s a jump in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when allied forces, including the U.S. stormed the beaches of Normandy to eradicate Adolf Hitler’s control.Lind is among more than 200 parachutists handpicked from all over the world to do the jump in England. They will commemorate the landings that happened on D-Day (the beginning of the end of World War II).“The didn’t have to do it. They stopped Europe from being oppressed and brought liberty and freedom back to Europe,” Lind said of the day the troops landed in Normandy.Lind is the director of the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum and has completed 165 other jumps, but he’s been training for this next feat for two years.“You’ll see waves of C-47 coming across the channel, 30 to 40 aircraft coming across,” he said. “They’ll be dropping 10 men in groups of three. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is facing another lawsuit over the department's loan forgiveness program aimed at helping defrauded students.More than 150,000 applications are pending, and some borrowers have been waiting years to hear whether they'll be granted debt relief. Seven borrowers, all of whom attended for-profit colleges, filed the lawsuit Tuesday."Department officials have not offered a timetable for reviewing these applications. It's becoming very clear that they're not treating them in good faith," said Eileen Connor, legal director at the Project on Predatory Student Lending, which filed the case on behalf of the seven borrowers.The department stopped processing claims under DeVos, who wants to rewrite the Obama-era rule that allows defrauded students to seek loan forgiveness.But a federal judge -- siding with Democratic attorneys general from 18 states and the District of Columbia -- ruled that DeVos' freeze was "arbitrary and capricious" and ordered immediate implementation of the rule in October.Still, the department did not process any more claims through the end of last year, according to the latest data available, and Connor says there's been no indication that it has started to review them again.The Department of Education did not immediately respond to a request for comment.DeVos has called the rule, known as Borrower Defense to Repayment, "bad policy."
