SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California health officials announced Friday the steepest climb in positive coronavirus cases in history."When I'm worried I'll tell you so you can worry with me and we're there," California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said. He's worried hospitals could be overwhelmed if we don't stop the rapid spread of the virus."This rapid rate of rise could be even higher if we don't act soon," Dr. Erica Pan, state epidemiologist and deputy director of the California Department of Public Health Center for Infectious Diseases, said.Pan added that we could have a higher spike than we saw over the summer.Many are taking their words to heart and stocked up to stay home. San Diegans saw empty shelves and product limits this week across the county, but officials urge consumers not to worry."We didn't put limits on early enough. There's plenty of product in the supply chain and we just thought it would be better to be proactive because when people only buy what they need there's plenty of supply in the supply chain," said. Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen, asking customers to only buy what they need.When it comes to another lockdown, Director of the National Institute of Health Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's unnecessary. "Public health measures, not lockdown of the country, but public health measures that are simple and easy to understand. The universal wearing of masks. The physical distancing. The avoiding congregating and crowded places. Outdoors is better than indoors, washing hands. It sounds simple in the context of this ominous outbreak but it can turn it around and that's what we need to do," Fauci said.Dr. Ghaly said that doesn't mean more restrictions are off the table. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Before the sun rose Friday, cars already packed parking lots at San Diego beaches to kick off Labor Day weekend and what's expected to the some of the hottest days of summer.However, San Diego County leaders said no matter where you are this weekend, they want to emphasize people must still follow CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.ABC 10News was at La Jolla Shores on Friday morning as beachgoers wearing masks secured spots far enough to stay socially distanced.Beachgoer and Santee resident Kris Moberly, “We know we can find a spot if we come early."It's the new norm, but also a way to ensure San Diego stays off the state's watchlist after just getting off of it two weeks ago.Moberly said she hopes everyone will follow the rules this weekend, telling ABC 10News, "I'm sure there's people who push the limits but you're responsible for your own health and I think most people are considerate of others."San Diego Lifeguards said they won't be regulating when it comes to social distancing or masks."We're going to be focused on keeping people safe in the water, but social distancing is everyone's responsibility,” a lifeguard told ABC 10News.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the status of our county depends on people's actions this weekend. In a press conference earlier this week, he said people should avoid indoor parties and continue to follow CDC guidelines.To ensure added safety, beaches like Carlsbad will also be handing out masks and teaching visitors about safety guidelines.Lifeguards said in addition to COVID-19 restrictions, the heat will also be a big safety factor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California's regional stay-at-home orders will go into effect in San Diego County on Sunday after the Southern California region fell below the 15% ICU threshold that triggers the restrictions.The state Department of Public Health announced the Southern California region, which includes San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, fell to 13.1% ICU capacity on Friday. That number dropped to 12.5% on Saturday.The restrictions will begin for a region at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, according to the state. The region will be allowed to exit the order and return to previous reopening restrictions on Dec. 28 if ICU capacity projections for the following month are above or equal to 15%.RELATED: San Diego hospitals react to Newsom’s regional stay-at-home orderUnder the regional stay-at-home order, restrictions will last for three weeks and ban gatherings of people from different households. Several businesses will also be forced to close, including:indoor and outdoor playgrounds;indoor recreational facilities;hair salons and barbershops;personal care services;museums, zoos, and aquariums;movie theaters;wineries, bars, breweries, and distilleries;family entertainment centers;cardrooms and satellite wagering;limited services;live audience sports; andamusement parks.Schools with a waiver, "critical infrastructure," retail stores at 20% capacity, and restaurants offering takeout and delivery service can stay open. Hotels can also remain open "for critical infrastructure support only," and churches would be limited to outdoor services. Businesses have 48 hours to comply with the new health order.RELATED: Gov.
