It is a common sight this time of year---Amazon delivering packages, but this time it's some of Baltimore's 4,000 employees of the company helping it deliver 2,000 so-called "boxes of smiles" to those who need them the most in the city."This includes toys, gifts, items of personal care and so and so forth," said Amazon Operations Director Preet Virdi as workers brought the gifts into the City Hall Rotunda.The need for such essentials became evident earlier this year when the city attempted to put a number on its disenfranchised citizens."We have approximately 2500 men, women and children who were experiencing an episode of homelessness at that time," said City Homeless Services Director Jerrianne Anthony.For those who have experienced life without a roof over their head, the boxes of smiles represent far more than a collection of gifts and essentials."Amazing. Amazon. The gifts. We need them. We need the Mayor's Office of Human Services, because without them, we have no hope," Sakina Ilyas told the crowd.But once she stepped out of the spotlight of this staged event, Ilyas opened up about her own experience with her family's past homelessness."It was very, very stressful especially during the holidays. No family. Nowhere to go,” said Ilyas. “The problem here in Baltimore City is lack of housing. Lack of affordable housing. There are over 17,000 abandoned houses that are just sitting there."In the meantime, just 10 days from now, on December 20, the Housing Authority of Baltimore City will no longer accept applications for public housing, citing a waiting list of 14,000 that averages seven years to deliver.While the unexpected gifts, along with a check for ,000 are appreciated, Ilyas is left pondering the obvious."More is needed, because when this is gone, the stage is set, the curtain is open, but what happens when it's over?"The city did adopt a three-year action plan on homelessness earlier this year with the goal of combining action, results and concrete steps to address the problem. 2036

Israel's Beresheet, the first privately-funded mission to the moon, has crashed.The spacecraft aimed to perform a soft landing on the moon and would have made Israel the fourth country to do so -- and by far the smallest. Only the United States, the former Soviet Union and China have done it before."I am sorry to say that our spacecraft did not make it in one piece to the moon," said Opher Doron, the manager of Israel Aerospace Industries' Space Division."We made it all the way to the moon. This is a great accomplishment. We are the seventh country to make it all the way to the moon."The 0 million spacecraft, built by SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries, lost communications with the control room in Israel during the landing sequence. As program managers who had been watching the mission in real time tried to re-establish communications, they also dealt with issues in the spacecraft's main engine.At the time of the communications failure, the Beresheet was traveling at approximately 2,110 mph and was about 120 kilometers (about 74 miles) from its intended landing site."There is a suspicion that we did not land on the moon in the best fashion. We are trying to clarify the matter," a member of the SpaceIL team monitoring the landing sequence said.The spacecraft crashed in the last part of its journey, moments before it was supposed to land.SpaceIL was founded eight years ago to compete for the Google Lunar XPrize. The contest offered million for the first privately funded team to launch a spacecraft to the moon, transmit high-definition video and travel 500 meters in any direction.The XPrize was cancelled in January 2018 but the Israeli team decided to continue its pursuit of the moon landing.The Beresheet spacecraft was launched on board a Falcon 9 rocket in late February. In a sea of young people fighting for their future, there's a 13-year-old girl named Haven Coleman.In many ways, she's just like any other teenager, but she's also the co-founder of a national organization called U.S. Youth Climate Strike. She spends every Friday striking outside the Colorado State Capitol.“So the story... involves sloths," Haven says.Inspired several years ago to save the sloths she deeply loves, Haven decided to become a climate activist."I was trying to do everything and anything, and I'm still doing that to stop climate change because this is something that's so like... big, so terrifying, and that's gonna be following me and my generation," she explains. "And it has been for our whole lives."Growing up during a time when climate change is a common topic, Haven wasn't shocked when she found out carbon dioxide has now reached a level in the atmosphere that hasn't been seen for three million years. On May 11, sensors at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii measured concentrations of the greenhouse gas to be at 415 parts per million. That means for every 1 million molecules of gas in the atmosphere, 415 were carbon dioxide. Compare that to 315 ppm 60 years ago, and 280 at the start of the industrial revolution. Without human interference, carbon in fossil fuels would leak slowly into the atmosphere through volcanic activity over millions of years. That's how the Earth has had these levels before. But a process that is normally very slow has been accelerated by the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas."Those greenhouse gases, that carbon pollution that we're putting into the atmosphere, much of that is going to stay there for a very long period of time and affect our climate for decades to come," Tony Dutzik said.Tony Dutzik with Environment America says what's most concerning about this data, is that human beings have never lived in a climate as hot as the one that existed three million years ago. Sea levels were approximately 50 feet higher than where they are today.According to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, vegetation records from that era called Pliocene show forests growing in the Canadian arctic, and savannas covering what is now known as the north African desert. The impacts of a changing climate are already evident in the United States."We're beginning to see supercharged storms -- storms that are gaining energy from our warmer oceans -- that are dumping immense amounts of rainfall. Storms like Hurricane Harvey, and Hurricane Florence in just the last few years," Dutzik says. "Sea level is rising at about a tenth of an inch per year, and that rate of rise is accelerating, and so cities like Boston and Miami increasingly have to deal with coastal flooding. And in places in the west, we're seeing larger more intense wildfires that burn hotter and are harder to control."As catastrophic as these events may seem, Dutzik says change is possible if everyone plays a part."Every day we have the opportunity when we're making energy efficiency upgrades to our homes, when we're purchasing our next car, when we're choosing where to live -- whether we live some place that's close to the places that we need to be or far away," Dutzik says.However, Dutzik notes a majority of change necessary to alter the course the earth's current projections will take a lot of political power. Power that young people like Haven are strongly pushing for."I hope that we fix this," Haven says. JPMorgan Chase, which is the parent company of Chase Bank, announced this week plans to make it easier for those with criminal pasts to be considered for employment with the company. As part of JPMorgan Chase's new initiative, the company will no longer ask employees to reveal if they have a criminal past during the application process. The company said this initiative allows for those with criminal backgrounds to receive the same consideration as any other applicant, when their background has no bearing on job requirements.The company said that in 2018, the company hired 2,100 people with criminal backgrounds, which represented 10 percent of all new hires for the year. JPMorgan Chase said those hired generally had been charged with low level offenses such as disorderly conduct, personal drug possession and DUI. These applicants were hired for positions in entry-levels jobs such as transaction processing, and lending and account servicing.“Business has a responsibility to partner with policy, business and community leaders to create an economy that works for more people. When someone cannot get their foot in the door to compete for a job, it is bad for business and bad for communities that need access to economic opportunity,” said JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon in a statement. “Giving more people a second chance allows businesses to step-up and do their part to reduce recidivism, hire talented workers, and strengthen the economy.”The financial services company's decision to ban the box is part of a broader initiative to advocate for reforms to make it easier for those with criminal backgrounds to be part of the workforce. JPMorgan Chase said it will advocate for restoration of Pell Grants to those with criminal pasts, training for people with criminal backgrounds, and support reforms to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's (FDIC) hiring rules. "The FDIC believes that at a minimum, each insured institution should establish a screening process that provides the insured institution with information concerning any convictions or program entry pertaining to a job applicant. This process would include, for example, the completion of a written employment application that requires a listing of all convictions and program entries," the FDIC said in a statement in 2018.JPMorgan Chase's plan has earned the support of two U.S. governors: Utah Governor Gary Herbert and Delaware Governor John Carney. “In Delaware, we know it’s important to offer our neighbors a second chance, to allow Delawareans who have a criminal history to compete for a job and contribute to our success as a state,” said Delaware Governor John Carney. “That’s why we are excited about these initiatives from JPMorgan Chase – a major employer in Delaware.
